Push to expand PJ's legacy??
Does anybody think there is a plan to really make PJ a more visible band, sorta like a U2 that started in the 90s?
I think they really started it with the promotion of the last album, to get their feet wet. SNL, videos, Lolla and a return to other festivals, even the Bonnaroo appearance.
Now, they are starting a 2 year reissue program to virtually coincide with an album of new material with the producer of their most successful albums, sells wise and artistically.
I think they've reached an age where they feel like they are in total control and they wanna set themselves up for the long haul.

I agree...I think the fan base is there and growing....I can't see PJ being this crazy super- freak-out band..I love them and they way they have been operating !
I agree too. I don't want to see PJ turning into a huge band like U2.
Plus Eddie would look like an idiot with those sunglasses...
He looks ok in aviators...
Ed wore eyeliner at the 7 worlds collide shows.
As long as it doesn't affect their music, I don't care how visible PJ gets.
i think that people aren't buying records like they used to and pj has become accustomed to living an expensive lifestyle, plus they have people that have been with them since the beginning, and i'm sure they pay them very well. i think they just want to sell records and make some money for themselves and their friends and do what they love most, which is making music on their own terms. i don't think it's a conscious effort to cement their legacy or extend their fan base. they did a lot more press in 06 than they had done in years and it really didn't make a huge difference. they need to sell product to keep the machine going, which will allow all of us freaks to follow them around for years and years.
I missed that
Do you have a picture of Ed wearing eyeliner? I can't believe he'd do that! I want picture proof!!
I would think less of PJ if they really went commercial only marketing-wise (and they have started), but would still go to gigs, but U2 went commercial both marketing and music-wise.
If they become the next huge band, thats fine with me. As long as I can still get tickets, that is.
I dont care if they become the next band that plays club shows either. As long as I can get tickets.
And, as someone stated, their musical integrity stays in tact.
Think Tom Petty, Neil Young, Springsteen. They are huge and maintain their musical integrity. I dont have to agree with every single business decision.
After all, it is a business. And after all, most musicians want as many people as possible to hear their art.
Nuclear fission
Yeah, agreed.
Nuclear fission
They haven't made an album that made them a ton of money since Vitalogy. Unless you sell millions of copies you won't be living in luxury. They make their money w/ touring and merchandise. I see 0% of these re-releases having anything to do with supporting some sort of expensive lifestyle for any of them. Their albums don't "keep the machine going" anymore, and haven't for a while.
All in my opinion of course.
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
(did we really need FOUR pics??) :?
Anything close to 1mil will make a pretty big chunk of change for any band. That whole >$1 per album sold is closer to what a band without any publishing rights.
Touring IS where they make the huge jack though. They have more cash than we'll ever know, especially with their modest touring setup.
Don't forget about the Bono cowboy hat..... That would be a great Ed look. NOT!
Big chunk of change yes, but not "extravagant lifestyle" chunk of change.

Not quite..........I don't really think there is a big plan. A lot of people on here tend to believe PJ sits around and masterminds these things, when in all reality they are probably not that involved.
Also, since they will be releasing the new album independently, i think it could be considered a step in the opposite direction.
totally agree. They aren't masterminding anything. They've made their money. they don't give a shit. They are going to do what they want as far as getting the Jam out there.
Hmm............. I don't think it will be totally independent though. They will at least have a distribution/promotion deal with someone.
I don't know about that. They've been saying in interviews for years that they would like to remix Ten. Sony could have hired a college intern for peanuts to remaster it and make it louder, then slapped a few bonus tracks onto the end and sold it as deluxe to make a ton of $. The fact that Brendan O'Brien is involved in completely remixing the entire album indicates that on some level the band has a significant hand in making sure this is a quality release and not just a record company hatchet job. I don't know if they're seeking to expand their legacy, but I've no doubt they're trying to protect it. They don't want to end up like the Who... a band that now advertises cars on their 19th greatest hits collection (look next time you're at the shop... "featuring Bargain, as heard in the car commercial"... jesus christ!).
That's a damn shame, Pretty Hate Machine could use a decent remaster.
