Why do they make you go through all this hooplah just to sign up? I'm thinking about joining Curves and have been emailing the manager-lady and she refuses to give me the pricing plans via email...she insists I must come in. I swear I hate these pressured situations...it's like the same with time-share sales people. UGH. Sorry, I just needed to rant.

Yeah, I tend to zone out as well.

I thought I heard that Bally's was going under??

You should check out the gym before you join. Always sing up during a promotion. If you sign up under normal rates you're paying way more than you should.

Actually there IS a promotion going on...50% off initiation fee and free 30 days. But I would at least like to know what the price range is before I waste my time and theirs.

You can usually get them to wave the fee if you tell them you are looking at other places. Also, you can sometimes say you work for some big company and ask if they have a discount with them. Works for some of the national gyms.

Ugh...see...I hate all of this nonsense. Why can't it just be straight forward? It makes me not want to join.

Honestly, I hate those chain gyms (24hr, Ballys, Golds). There always crowded with wannabe bodybuilders, weekend warriors, d-bags who hit on women instead of working out and people on cell phones. In other words, there full of people I can stand to be around :)

You live in San Diego with a ton of good spots to work out.... The beach, the city or the hills. If you don't want to deal with a gym you should get yourself and nice pair of running/walking shoes and hit the street.

Well, the gym I want to sign up for is for ladies only...and it's structured, which I need.

Maybe look into alternative structured programs. I know people that do bootcamp type stuff at the beach (For all levels of fitness). I work out at a martial arts gym with plenty of women learning self defense. I know people that do the social sports clubs like Vavi.

That is all assuming you don't want to join one of the gyms mentioned above.

oh and BTW...I know you live in SD because you replied to my thread about tires and mentioned the various freeways in SD :)

Yup, which is exactly why I need something structured...I totally have a tendancy to slack.

Yeah, it's a lot easier to stick with something if your expected to show up to it. If you have a gym where you can come and go as you please then you're more likely to make excuses for yourself.

I'm just speaking from my own experience...

There's that...but also...I tend to slack on my own at the gym...and Curves has a strict program they do...which I think would be good. Plus, as you mentioned before, I hate when the gym becomes a pick up scene...and it would be refreshing to workout with just a bunch of chicks.

Oh that's cool then....Lots of chicks and structure. Sounds like my kind of gym ;)

You should check it out. Show up, take the tour and bounce the hell out if they don't tell you what you want to hear.

and don't give them your contact info!

  • I'd love to join Curves, but damn are they strict with the women only policy.
    fuck the public
  • a place by me opened up recently, called Planet fitness. it's $20 a month with no commitment, and $10/mo with a $60 fee. I want to go check it out, see if it's a decent gym. I used to go to golds, and it was $65/mo 5 years ago. you really have to be careful with gyms. One went under here on LI, and the members still had to pay for a gym that no longer existed. it was in the contract

yeah that's why I don't bother with gyms. Sometimes I would like to take a class just to make sure im using correct form (yoga, pilates) I do all my exercising at home. :)

I've had friends here in LA who've had great experiences with Curves.

Years ago my husband and I got sick of the sales pitch bs at Bally's and places like that (and I would have preferred an all chick place) and we said fuck it and bought a Lifecycle, for like the same $$ as the gym membership. And because it was so expensive, we forced ourselves to use it. Since then we've gained a treadmill and one of those weight machine things (yes our house is too crowded), but spending the money guilts us into using all the equipment. So that's our self-discipline.

Good for you! I'll be honest...I'm a total slacker when it comes to working out. I did sign up for Curves and have my first workout with a trainer tonight.

$1000 annually or you pay $18 per fortnight, I shall join when I get back from overseas.

I think I'm gonna sign up with them today, but I want to go see first. They seem to have a number of locations in my area, including one near work and one near home. Hopefully there's some reciprocity where I can use both.

exactly. their relentless, high pressure sales tactics really turn me off.
and i refuse to pay someone to tell me i should do more sit-ups.

though the structure is good for some, it's just not for me.
