For anykind of vacation plans i'm sure some people here allways forget this/that & other things to bring along ,what not to bring along ,what not to do >>>>
my 1st tip
(1)try not to bring toddlers to DYSNEY probably the best age is 7yrs and older from what i've experienced and seen ..way to much work for the parents you end up needing a vacation just to recover  .
(2) bring small containers of sun tan lotions ..
(3) make dinner reservations way ahead .
these are just three i came up with today ...
so post any that you can think of even for tour time :D ....

Make copies of the front/backs of your credit/debit cards so you have the account #'s and phone numbers in case they are stolen or lost. I leave the copy hidden in a suitcase or in my vehicle. The other alternative is to leave it with a family member that you can call if it is stolen.

Chlorox cleaning wipes. I wipe down every hotel room, light switches, door knobs, remote controls, bathroom fixtures, bathtub, toilet, etc. etc.

Pack light, although I can't say that I take my own advice in this regards, but I have improved. Take easy dry clothing so you can wash it out in the hotel room and let it dry overnight or the next day.

get a room w/ a kitchenette if you're planning on staying for a few days. then, head to the local grocery store & pick up some cheap meals, beer, etc. that way, you can save some money from eating out during your whole vacation. we did this last year & saved quite a bit of cash.

i was about to say the same thing. also make copies of your passport. you can also send them to yourself as a PDF attachment in your email and access them that way if you need to.

*definitely* pack light, you can always do laundry at the hotel or the local laundromat if you're staying a longer while. especially helpful if you're taking trains and such, makes life so much easier! it pains me at the airport when i see people carrying a billion bags. not to mention they charge for your bags now, so even more incentive!

if you plan to buy some stuff to take home, and are in the U.S., you can get this box at the post office that has a flat rate, no matter how much stuff you put in it. just has to fit into it. worth the $8 or whatever to not mess with carrying more crap :) i haven't done this yet but was a tip i came across last year :)
  • Do NOT go to the beach when either drunk or very very tired... unless you have somebody designated to turn you over every half hour

tickets, money, passport... keep saying it... anything else is replaceable or forgettable.

When we drive we always take a big cooler. We eat breakfast in the hotel room - usually oj, bananas, or energy bars. Then we eat lunch on the road when traveling which saves you from having to eat at fast food places along the way and saves time (and calories). We just pull over at a rest stop and enjoy. We also try to keep beer, water, peanut butter, crackers, energy bars, and fruit in the hotel room for snacks and to keep costs down.

So true... and as mentioned before you can even hand wash stuff in your hotel room.

About 8 years ago an old girlfriend an me did the backpacking around Europe thing for a couple of weeks. The company I worked for had these outdated company t-shirts in storage. I took a bunch of those and just threw them away or left them in the hotel room when they were dirty. Not the "green-ist" approach, but it lightened my pack as I went :)

And always leave some room in your luggage for stuff you might buy.

Yeah... unless you don't care about money, it makes a lot of sense to eat a meal or two in instead of going out to eat every day. Even if you do eat out, you can save leftovers for lunch.

A lot of hotels have good continental breakfasts, so you can use them to stock up on fruit and bagels and stuff for your room.

Even in general, just buy food and bulky stuff when you get there... When I was younger (and she still does it), my mother packed like there were no stores within hours of our destination. It makes no sense to pack a lot of food or diapers or any of that stuff that takes up a lot of room, when you can just buy it when you get there.

  • another healthy way to eat on a trip is to visit local farmer markets if there's one going on during your visit. especially if you're in another country, it's fun to see the differences in produce :)

That's what my husband says. However, I hate using my vacation time to shop. I'm not a shopper. I want to Vacation when I'm on vacation, which is one reason why I take stuff even though I can buy it there. It saves vacation time.

yeah, i draw the line there too. i bring my shampoo/conditioner and lotion but just have it in small containers so it doesn't take up too much room.

  • tips for traveling in general

how to pack lightly. trust me, this packing method has been one of the most useful things ive seen. especially if you go away for a weekly business trip.

    http://www.onebag.com/popups/bundle.html

for those that travel a lot (i.e, me), those people that hold up the security lines need to know the basics. first off, the tsa is doing its job to protect you and everyone else. dont complain. dont get all pissy at them. if you are not checking your bags, keep all of your liquids in a separate plastic bag, and in containers no larger than 3 oz. put it in a separate bin going through the xray. same thing with your laptop. check your shampoo, cologne, perfume, saline solution, etc. with your checked luggage. you get your carry on ONE extra bag, albeit a purse, laptop bag, backpack. take off your sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets, hats, metalic objects and shoes before going through the xray. simple things like this can make the line a little less hectic, especially if you are running late. and yes, get there two hours early.

Hahaha... as a frequent traveller... I AGREE! Especially with the two hours early thing... I go kinda nuts if I'm travelling with someone else and they say 'we should get there an hour before the flight  are you fucking SERIOUS????? Have you SEEN the queues they have at times? What if we get a flat tire? What if there's an accident on the motorway... there are a million things that can happen between leaving the house and getting on the plane. One of the worst experiences I had travelling was when my friend had all the details and told me the time... we got there 2 hours before that time and as soon as we went in, I realised the ONLY flight to Amsterdam on the board was closing checkin NOW  so we'd to run to check in, run through security, run to the gate... no cigarette, nothing  so it got off to a bad start... I couldn't talk to her on the flight. I'm generally quite laid back... but that's cos I'm a time freak... I'm always seriously early for stuff... If I've to run, I'm NOT laid back and I'm NOT in a forgiving mood

We are going to London/Manchester in April/May, and since we will be staying at 3 different hotels, we are trying to book comfy rooms that are close to tube stations....this makes it a bit less stressful knowing that we don't have long walks back to the hotels after gigs, etc. It is always comforting to know that we won't have to lug our suitcases around too much after an 11 hour flight!

It REALLY is!! I love it. I tend to get to the airport like 2 hours early...so after I get all checked in I can grab a drink and just watch all the comings and goings.

P.S. Ever notice some people get all crazy when they travel? My dad's like that...like he turns neurotic.

  • i absolutely have to get to the airport early. i HATE being late, or cutting it close.

while i like to get to the airport early, and i adore traveling...i hate airports. always have. seeing people say goodbye in particular gets me. i try to just keep to myself and stay distracted enough until i get onto the plane.

quick people watching story....i was waiting for my flight in the bar and this guy had been chatting up the bartender....she's polite but wants nothing to do with him....as he's leaving, he shows her a commission check he just got from some big sale he just made....he thought that would win her over....she smiled and he left for his flight....my buddy and i were laughing at this point and the bartender saw us and laughed and rolled her eyes

on topic.....if you will be packing quite a lot and don't want the hassle of lugging it to the airport you can fedex your bag to the hotel you will be staying at :D

The best airport people-watching was a flight from LV to SD in 2006...literally like half our flight was Ten Clubbers going to the SD show! We were just sitting there counting all the people in PJ shirts. It was pure awesomeness. Even the pilot came on at the end of the flight and told us all to enjoy the concert.

Sorry, I know that was a stretch in this thread...but I really wanted to share that story!
