Tracy Chapman

Never hear much love for her on this board, or in the music industry, or in terms of fans. But her importance is undeniable.
When I was heavily political, she was on my playlist alot.
I think she was able to paint portraits of what it was like to be an african american woman, in america, to live in the inner city, the rage, the anger, the desire for things to change.
Some incredible songs, Talkin Bout a revolution, Mountain O Things, Across the Lines, Cross Roads, Behind the Wall.
The heartbreaking Fast Car could be the landmark song of her catalogue. The idea of being trapped, trapped in a situation, a hopeless situation, in this case I assume, the soul breaking conditions in inner city america, and the idea that a simple thing like a car and driving away from it all, is so intense and freeing. I dont think this song is a hopeful one despite it being about a car and leaving the bad situation. I dont think the characters did get away, and thats what makes it all the more haunting.
Dont know much of her catalogue past the first few albums though, as far as I know, she is still touring and making records
