Metallica's Death Magnetic

I've been listening to this cd for quite some time now, and I can't get enough. If you're a Metallica fan and you don't have it, I have three words for you: get it now. What does everyone else think about it?

Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.

My bad. I guess the thrill of the music made me ignore the last two letters in the album title. Topic has been edited though.
lol dude don't worry about it.
i was supposed to see them in jersey a few weeks ago. had ga tickets and was going to get there so much before but something came up and couldn't go. i got the bootleg though and the show was great. can't wait to see them at msg this fall man!

Every solo sounds the same.
Lars, as always, sounds like crap and is definitely the weak point in the band.
It sounds too much like Metallica trying to make a METALlica album. Just not very natural.
I dunno how anybody can listen to it over and over. For the first time in music history, my ears were sensitive enough to not be able to listen to the whole thing in one sitting.
Dewie, you made some good points. I don't think it is better than the Black Album. That album gets a lot of shit for them "selling out", but it has some great songs on it (overplayed as hell, but still good songs).
I haven't listened to Magnetic enough to comment on your point about the solos.
"It sounds too much like Metallica trying to make a METALlica album. Just not very natural. "- This is the best description of the album that I've heard.
I also agree about how you can't see listening to it over and over. It's on my ipod and when the DM songs come on shuffle, I'll listen to them but they don't particularly get me excited. I also never have a real urge to hear one of the songs from that record.
One thing that hasn't been touched on is the lyrics are so awful, as they have been since every album post Black Album. I'm not asking for Bob Dylan, but it would be nice to not cringe when I listen to the songs.
And the solos lacking is mostly due to Hammett playin pretty well the same thing in different keys. To much weedily weedily and not enough substance. I was kinda expecting him to blend the bluesier style, which I thought was one of the higher points of Load and Reload, with the blistering speed.

I disagree but hey everyone is different - I think that Lars isnt at the peak of his powers, but in the albums up to the Black album i dont feel like he is even close to the weak point in the band, rather one of the strengths.
I really loved the album - I dont listen to it like its one of the earlier albums, but I really enjoy it and I like the direction coming back to the way in which they are playing. Good stuff and it was one of my fave albums of 2008 for sure
I think it is a complete turnaround from St. Anger, but it does suffer from some of the issues that St. Anger had, namely lyrical shortcomings. One of the many things I hated about St. Anger was the repeating lyrics. The way he would take a few phrases and repeat them over and over and call it good. There is some of that on Death Magnetic too - Broken Beat & Scarred comes to mind. But the music to that songs lifts it above the lyrical annoyance. Better lyrics than St. Anger but not by much.
Gone are the days of And Justice for All as far as Metallica lyrics go I guess.
BTW, I really like Load and Reload, except for a few clunkers here and there on those records. Like one of the previous posters, I miss the bluesy solos Kirk did for those two. His solos on DM are good, but not very memorable. I mean you can hum previous solos by memory if want, but these sound rushed and aren't very melodic. Not sure I am explaning that correctly.
Cyanide is awful buy the way. Lyrically and musically. Shouldn't that have been a B-Side?
I think the 2nd half really falls off. Can't stand Cyanide. Unforgiven III should have had a different name, it has nothing to do with the first two and isn't nearly as good. Judas Kiss is OK. Suicide and Redemption is good. Glad to hear the instrumental has made it back. My Apocalypse - barely listen to it. But the first 5 songs are hard to beat.

I agree. I miss the days when they would tackle a subject (the justice system, war, etc.) in the lyrics rather than just throw together a bunch of negative words and repeat them the whole song.
The worst thing about this is that Hetfield isn't a horrible lyricist. I read somewhere that before they would start an album Lars would show Hetfield some movies that he thought would make interesting song topics (apparently he showed him the movie "...And Justice for All" which is where that song came from). Lars said he tried to do that this time, but Hetfield wasn't interested.
Na,
I think its a fantastic album. They can continue to make music like this for another 10 years and i would love it.

...and don't listen too loud because kirk "the ripper" hammett might blow your fucking ears off!

Can't wait to see The Sword again, they are a brilliant stoner band.
I don't think anyone was arguing that Kirk can't play. It was more that he wasn't reaching his full potential on this album.
Thanks for the video, that does rock!

Yeah! Like with "One". I wish they would go back to that a little.
I didn't even mind the more personal lyrics on Load and Reload. Some somgs like Bleeding Me, The House That Jack Built, Outlaw Torn and Fixxer are great! Don't know what happened after that.
