Please bring back a stronger baseline & add some muscle for the new album. The last two records were great but sounded flatter to me than previous albums.
Riot Act and s/t sound like shit. Even the Gorge boxset sounds like it's coming in on a tinny transistor radio. I was just listening to Atlanta 94 and a bootleg taped off the radio and then transferred to flac on a computer, downloaded, and burned to CD has better sound and more bass than the Gorge box... that is fucked up.
i wish his bass would sound as sick as it did on 'the real me'... that was just fucking amazing!
THAT tune is a bass player's wet dream. i know, i am married to a bass player and he LOVES to go off and play the shit out of that song. and i completely enjoy every minute of it!
And to think I was questioning whether or not my hearing was going on me... Then I run into this thread.
For God's sake, bring Ament up in the mix. His bass playing is one of the main reasons I started listening to this band. There are so many standout moments on Ten and Vs. He was a force that was simply impossible to ignore back then. All of his compositions are singular and unique. The man is a compelling artist. I can't say that about many bass players.
I don't know what has happened since No Code, but you'd think he's not even playing on some songs. Not for lack of effort (entirely), but rather because I just can't hear his ass.
Waiting on you O'Brien.

OK, my bad. The Even Flow I was thinking of was from the Oct 3, 2005 show. That version actually features more of an extended Matt drum bit (the first half of which has Jeff playing a simple bass line before giving up).
This thread needs to keep getting bumped because it is more important than anything else being discussed on here in my opinion. Jeff needs to be turned up. Its ridiculous. And I hope on every re-release O'Brien remix's the bass up a few db.
Edit: Besides V's. To me, that is the only Pearl Jam album with a perfect Mix, it simply cannot be improved upon.

As a bassist and PJ fan i completely agree!
I have hope for the ten re reissue.

Completely agree. I can't think of a single other band with weaker bass than PJ... it's a problem live, on the bootlegs, and on the studio albums. And it makes no sense. If you listen to them live from 91-94, the bass is kicking ass the whole show. It's like around 95 when Ed took over the band he made a concentrated effort to kill all bass, funk, and rhythm in favor of grungy punk guitar overdrive. It's a damn shame. As soon as Ed added his third guitar to the mix, the bass seemed to completely disappear.
I think one of the reasons so many of the rockers or the harder/up-tempo songs on the last few albums haven't had that same "punch" is because Jeff isn't turned up high enough and Mike and Stones guitars are a tad too clean sounding.
Just my opinion. They still sound amazing.
Jeff playing "The Real Me" on VH1 Rock Honor's the Who is what I'd like to see more of. Clearly not just covers, but turn the guy UP and give him some original baselines.
I hope the new album has some basslines as good as the one in the classic Daryl Hall & John Oates song "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)."
I am asking for a great cover of this for the 2009 Holiday Single.

It's a little known fact that Jeff Ament was actually killed in a strange accident around this time. It involved a poorly wrapped Powerbar and some fire ants during a South American excursion to climb up Machu Picchu. Jeff Ament was actually replaced by Nikki Sixx which explains why he stopped wearing giant hats, his mix is so low on every record, and he rarely gives in person interviews without wearing a ski mask.

Agreed! My favorite every version of "Leaving Here" has Jeff breaking down during one of those little mini-solo things they do in the middle.
I've heard a version of Evenflow where Jeff was featured, too. Best. Evenflow. EVAR!
what show was even flow from?
someone always duffs during leaving here mini solo's
I'll have to check when I get home. I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere.
Ain't it the truth!

That would have been the Randall's Island show with John Popper on the harp.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me...
