A few months ago I posted and acted like, what's the problem?.. but today it hit me..

I should have been laid off today.

I started at this company barely 5 months ago, and am the lowest on the totem pole.

The company made some layoffs today. My department fortunately only one, but I was in line to be that one.

Fortunately, I worked my ass off and made it appear that I was working my ass of, so they fired somebody who gave a slightly less shit than I do.

It helps that a best friend is the guy I report to, but that what's makes me feel even worse about this.

Moral of the story is, work your ass off! Life is constant work and struggle to survive!.. and most importantly, be thankful for what you have and stop being jealous of the havemores.

If a man speaks in a forest and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Keep in mind that a lot of times, it isn't the guy who is lowest on the totem pole that is first to go.
If the company needs to cut costs, people that are middle of the pack are often the best choice.
They make more money, they don't have the responsibility of someone higher in the chain, and they can be replaced by someone lower (who still makes the same $).

Just keep busting your ass off, because if they see this and while you are the low man and probably make the least money, those things actually increase your company value.
  • you ain't kiddin'!
our firm has been VERY fortunate, still doing quite well...so thus far, no layoffs. however, all our clients are not doing so well, so we're not at the planned for/desired profit margins...but thank bejeebus we STILL are profitable! with all of it tho, we are taking a cautious approach - have cut fees, and major cutbacs on extraneous internal spending. we've gotten lots of emails about all the changes, things we should've done long ago in any case from an environmental standpoint...and lot of other things simply b/c they are unneeded/wasteful. when i had to *explain* all this to an associate in our group who was a bit *upset* that she could no longer order a box of tissues for her personal use within her own cube on the firm's dime  ....it took all i could not to say, all of these things add up to people's JOBS! and sure, all my self-control not to bust out laughing, since she genuinely was not please about the change. damnnnnn. however, after our convo...she *got* it...and sure, felt better. a bit of perspective can be VERY sobering. hell our top partners are no longer using black car services, so yea..... thankfully, we still get our busy season massages and lunches :D ...but i actully believe those expenses are covered out-of-pocket by our group's partners.

bottomline.....i AM thankful i still have my job, and a good job at that. 8-)

  • i had a friend of mine call me yesterday.....

he wanted to know what he had to do in order to get his truck driving license.....

this poor guy has a 4year business degree and hasnt worked in 6 months.....

i have no idea how much money he spent on his 4 year college education.....but i couldnt imagine spending all that money ......and then end up driving a truck......

that has got to be frustrating.....to say the least....

People just blame the economy as if they have no control over what happens to them....

    ...but your story proves otherwise.

The economy - whatever that is - is not to blame for all of our ecomonic problems.

People and companies that are doing work and business the right way are surviving and thriving.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
  • the *problem* there is, IF you are one of those people who works their ass off, and yet happens to work for a company, government agency, school, what have you...with poor business practices.....then you still could be SOL. and then, going out into a work economy where many, many others are looking for jobs as well...even if you are well-skilled....could still be rather disastrous. point being, we can all try hard, but sometimes it's pure dumb luck that we manage to hang on thro rocky times. i definitely count my blessings...and you bet.....work as hard and as best i can, when i can, to prove my worthiness...and sure, b/c that's just what i do. there may always be a *cause* but when the cause is completely outside your control, definitely scary.

Working your ass off isn't always a ticket to keeping your job. I was laid off in 2004 along with my entire department and about half the company I worked for. Work ethic didn't matter. Salary didn't matter. They just decided they didn't need those departments anymore and away we went. And I think that is more depressing than anything.

But, in your scenario, where they are picking and choosing here and there, then hell yes you better do something to get noticed.

Yeah I know what everyone is saying. I graduated from college in 2006, moved to Chicago for a little while but ended up moving back because I didn't feel like I gave my family's business a fair shot before I turned my back on it. I've been working here since, some days are alright, some suck-I'm not sure if it's for me, but I do know that if I leave it won't be until things start looking up. I'd like to move to a different part of the country to see whats doin', but the economy is really holding me back. I'm very thankful that I have a job I know I will not get laid off from- and unless things take a turn to the south, I will have work for life. Though I would hate to be my dad if it comes time to lay off people here since most of them have been here for a long time. Times like these when I hear of people out of work and struggling I'm very thankful

  • It's crazy but two days ago I had my annual review and found out my raise and bonus and was floored. I'm pretty uber-work guy so the work hard thing isn't a question. I don't hesitate to say I'm pretty productive compared to others etc. But the economy sucks and I work in the auto industry, but our company is doing well and is run by very smart people. When I saw my raise and bonus I almost went through the roof.

It's been a tough few years personally with housing issues, having our first child, second on the way but at least my wife and I are still employed in tough fields.

I'd definitely say the guy who said he worked his ass off is right. You can only control so much of your destiny. It would be smart to make sure you come off as productive as possible.
