2.16.09: A note from Trent and a wave goodbye

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Wow, that sounds like a cool pairing.

NIN opened for JA in the early 90s during a 4-night stand at the Universal Amphitheatre, and then, a few years later, NIN did a 3 or 4 night run at the same venue

It is interesting how each act took different paths...NIN (Trent) has had a few big bursts of activity, and has taken some long breaks, yet he has never really done anything to ruin his credibility.

JA seems to have broken up and reformed a zillion times for reunion tours, but now that Eric Avery is back, it feels like a proper reunion. I saw them last year at the NME Awards in L.A., and they seemed as vital as they did in the early 90s.

And that's the best part about Jane's...it's the original line-up with Eric Avery on bass. Hells yeah!!!

Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

That jumped out to me too... makes me even more sad that Lights in the Sky dvd never got off the ground. It was a phenomenal show.

That is one of the coolest things I have read in a while. It is nice to see People remembering those that helped them get where they are today. I am not a huge NIN fan, but I would love to see Jane's Addiction ... might have to check this out.

You know that a fan created DVD is in the process of being created though right? Trent released 400gb (yes gb) of HD footage from 3 shows in December, and there is a group (large) of fans creating a DVD using this footage (and a lot of awesome fan created footage) You can go to http://thisoneisonus.org/ to see what's happening about that and you can watch a trailer here

I don't think TR's going to stop making music though. I think it will all be okay. He's been doing something or other non-stop since about 05, and needs a break.

Yeah, but it looks incredibly complicated to get the dvd... there's all this seeding and stuff I don't understand.

I feel that he's probably not going to stop NIN altogether. The comment is not 100% clear. The man probably needs a break as he's been touring and releasing music non-stop for the last 4 years. Maybe he'll be more involved w/ other musicians and/or bands. It would be cool as all hell to see the Tapeworm project resurrected. But I'm sure that will never happen.
  • wow, i am supremely stoked for this.

So true. I'm an average NIN fan, but I love seeing them live. I'm really looking forward to seeing them again. Their Lights in the Sky tour was amazing, but I'm interested in seeing them put on a different show.

Seeing them tour with JA would be sweet! That youtube video of the upcoming dvd look amazing as well..

Yeah, but it looks incredibly complicated to get the dvd... there's all this seeding and stuff I don't understand.

Don't worry - there will be ways to get it - people are volunteering to burn it for others who don't do torrenting. I'll probably be burning a few copies after I download it, myself. I'll post when there's more info about that.

I am going to have to rethink my resistance to Bonnaroo. I want to catch as many shows as possible. Just dying to hear the dates so I can plan - with work I always have to plan ahead.

Yeah, I have tried multiple times to figure out the whole torrent thing and I'm convinced it's some big hoax/practical joke people are playing on me ;)
