Godawful old '70s punk bands

There's not enough negativity in this world, and fakkin' 'ell, there's a lot of old punk crap that deserves all the negativity you can muster.

Here's my offering for the worst offenders: The Slits. I'm sure some pretentious journo could write a thesis on their socio-political relevance to gender interrogation and displacement in the patriarchal postwar entertainment industry, blah blah woof woof, but they are completely and utterly talentless.

It's like Bananarama without the Bananas.

Imagine record companies wasting money on this shit, just to stay cool. This is bad enough to make me appreciate American Idol.

This thread subject is a misnomer... by qualifying it as Godawful 70's Punk bands, you create the false impression that, somewhere out there, there are good punk bands ;)

you haven't heard much punk. its the only explanation. its the theme for any anti establishment sentiment anywhere. Anti-flag, bad religion, rise against, nofx, some good bands out there still putting out great music.

I've heard all of them and don't like any of them. I don't care how cool and trendy the themes are, the music sucks. A hyperactive soundtrack for kids with ADD to kick the shit out of each other in mosh pits in the name of "sticking it to the man." Lame.

the bad religion show I went too didn't even have a moshpit. and no that is not even close to true. its an entire genre of music that your pissing on, there's no way you've heard it all. there is a lot of shitty music out there, but that's true with any type of music.

and to say that its about being cool and trendy shows how little you know about these bands. rise against are dorky vegetarians and they don't care how they come across. Bad Religion lead singer was a professor for some time, has a few books out...and Anti Flag covered this "this land is your land" by Woodie Guthrie...again not about being cool and trendy.

If you say so. I still hate punk and have never heard a punk song I liked. I don't even like Pearl Jam's totally watered down punk-influenced songs.

My brother used to be in a punk band. When I showed up to their shows in my average joe/preppy clothes, they looked at me like I was about to start enslaving poor people and pushing 401k's... they're as shallow and image conscious as any other scene. Being vegan or covering Woodie Guthrie doesn't change that.

that is shitty. there is no place for elitism in punk. not all bands encourage that.

Not too many bands do, but a fair number of fans do.

Come on, post clips of some '70s punk shite. Note I said '70s punk shite. Not '80s, '90s or Good Charlotte.

Here's some '70s political punk shite. This track was, er, "written" in 1979, so I'm counting it as '70s:

  • punk only ever existed in the 70's and then evolved to the lameness that became known as Hardcore. I think it would be easier to give youtube examples of these newer horrible bands that operate under the punk flagship. The Slits are a great band, and at least wrote all of there own music and played there own music. If they give you a great appreciation of American Idol I suggest listening again without your head in your ass. Just a thought...

and you obviously have no idea what an example of a punk band is... anti establishment?? all those bands you just named are permanent fixtures on the Vans warp tour every year!! Fat Mike from NOFX or the owner of Fat Records is all about capatalism and making money off the bands he signs and then sells the contracts to majors. Mr. Brett at Epitaph has changed the format of the record label to a more EMO-ish roster because there are no such thing as a good punk band in 2009 and the emo bands are the only ones moving merch and cd's.

punk is a figment of your imagination.

Punk ethics are pretty cool, punk music is pretty boring. There are some good punk songs, but it had probably run it's course as an interesting musical genre before it was even big.

If I took my head out of my arse they'd sound even worse. I'm trying to muffle the din.
