I am absolutely devastated, inconsolable at the moment.
I just hope that it is a false alarm, but looking at him he doesn't appear happy.
Taking him to another vet tomorrow night for a second opinion.

My heart goes out to you both. We've been through it. A sonogram confirmed our cat had it, with kidney failure on top of that (that's actually manageable). Hang in there.

  • Oh i'm so so sorry :(

Having had a cat pass away due to cancer recently, I can only echoe your feelings about now. The waiting to know is horrible.

My thoughts and love go out to you and your feline friend. I sincerly hope it's not the worst... or if it is, it's managable and curable.

    *hugs*

    Please, keep us updated.

Sorry to hear that :( Hope it is some positive news with the second vet.
  • :( :( :(
i hope for your kitty and you, it's not true. my very first kitty i ever had, as a child, wound up with brain cancer. eventually we had to put him down rather than let it continue and have him suffer. :( my heart goes out to you and your kitty - hoping for the best!
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes.
This one I am not taking very well, I grew up with my cat from 12 years old and now I'm almost 25 and he's almost 12. So yeah, all throughout my teen years he's been there.
I hardly slept last night and don't look forward to going to work today, hope I can keep my mind on the job.
I'm giving my cat antibiotics incase it is something other than cancer then if there is no improvement a blood & urine test will confirm whether or not it is cancer.
I feel very guilty for not taking him into the vet earlier, I thought he's just gone off his food because it's very hot here and in summer he tends to eat less, but after a few weeks I became more and more concerned and finally took him in last night, the vet looked pissed off at me and wasn't very friendly.
He just looks so sad and is crouching down all the time.
I gave him some food at 5am today but he just kept licking it and only had a few mouthfuls.

I'm really sorry to hear that. My cat (she's 15 and I'm 22, so she's been there since I was a kid) just was diagnosed with kidney failure, and the vet isn't sure what I can be done at this point. Just know there are others out there that feel your pain. Hope all works out.

reading your recent experiences with your cat almost makes me feel like I'm on the outside looking in on what happened with me and my own cat last year... I was in a situation so similar to yours. my cat, Abu, was just shy of his 15th birthday when he got cancer in his lungs. I got him for Christmas when I was 10. just like you and your cat, my cat was always with me while I was groing up through my teen years. what a great little buddy he was when no one else was there. he had always had asthma and would have little coughing spells from time to time, but one day he started huffing almost like he had something caught in his throat. on his initial visit to the vet, the X-Ray showed that that he had a growth in his chest which of course was a bad sign. anyway, after taking him to various specialists to get second opinions, his condition alternated between good and bad over the remainder of his time here. we had to force an antibiotic into his mouth on a daily basis, I can't recall the name of it now, and of course he'd always fight us on that. it was tough. we really thought he was going to make it. another vet even told us that she couldn't detect any kind of growth in his chest, and that his "spells" were a mystery and were because of his asthma. but when they drew some fluid that had been collecting in his lungs, they did detect carcinogens. and being the age he was, it was too risky to do an operation. and so, the cancer took him down within 2 months of having it. I truly hope your cat doesn't have to suffer the same fate. I do understand the situation you're in. no matter the outcome, just cherish every second you can with him. I know I wish I still could. I'll pray for ya :)

That's really sad. I lost my 13 year old dog within the past year, so I know your pain. I hope you get good news but, if not, you will get through it. Really.

Are there lesions around the mouth? Does the breath smell foul (decay style foul)?

Years ago, one of my cats had Rodent's Ulcer (which has nothing to do with rodents). Looked like a cancer but it wasn't. She responded well to treatment. Unfortunately, not all animals do.

Try to stay positive. I know it's hard, I've had cats all my life (and currently have 5) and I can understand what you must be going through.

My sending thought to you that your cat will be ok and treated well.
My dog was diagnosed with kidney cancerin 1990.It was a terrible time.I lost my greatest friend after a hard fought battle with the disease.

Thank you once again to all for your kind words.
I took him to the vet tonight for a second opinion, this vet was amazing and spent a lot of time even though he finished his shift, as for the other vet, he was very rude and didn't deserve my money.
The vet I saw tonight took a urine sample which cleared him of kidney disease or diabetes, now I have a nervous 24 hour wait to find out what the blood test reveals.
The vet noticed he is breathing rapidly and heavily, he thinks he may need a chest x-ray as there may be fluid in the lungs.
I feel so crap at the moment, I still don't know how I pulled through at work, at least it kept me occupied. Better than sitting home thinking about it. I am expecting the results via a call at work tomorrow, I hope it's good news.
If it is bad I don't want to know until after work when I am home, don't want to lose it at work
The hardest part was seeing him tonight he looked very sick, was just softly meowing at me and my mum like to tell us he's not well. :(

Just loads of cuddles - that's all you can do for him at the moment.

Sorry you had to deal with an asshole vet. Nothing like having to deal with such negativity and bad vibes when already dealing with a sick loved one. :x Good vibes coming to you and your kitty.

That unfortunately is the hardest part. Animals can't tell us if they feel slightly under the weather so it's just through our observations that we know how their general health is... He's obviously very sick and wants you to help him and you should be comforted by the knowledge that you are doing all you can. You love your cat and don't want to see him in pain, that's natural and getting a second opinion was the right thing to do.

Make you cat comfortable and don't lose hope. I've seen cats come through cancer, live with feline AIDS and even overcome brain damage and serious cat flu, they are strong creatures. He'll need you to stay positive and show him that you love him no matter what the outcome.

You and your cats are in my thoughts.

    Got the blood test results...
A lot of white blood cells, possibly inflammation due to an infection but they won't rule out cancer yet.
Some positive news if you can call it positive, a bit of relief.
I will take him for a chest x-ray to see what it is.
Thanks again for the kind words, it's been a shit week but listening to the Ten re-issue tracks before has given me a boost lol

I'm so sorry about your kitty - but happy about the relatively good news...
Lost my Meow-Meow kitty six months ago and still miss the crap out of her...Anyway, yeah, finding out what's wrong with them can take a bit of time, and in the meantime they look so sick...It's a tough thing to watch your cat fade away...

Hopefully you'll just need to keep your kitty on antibiotics for awhile and he/she bounces back for another sniff at the catnip! I wish you and your kitty all the best...

I left him at the vet today for a few hours, he had an x-ray which cleared him of anything in the heart, lungs, kidneys, his liver can be better but nothing too serious.
The vet told me it is pancreatitis, which vets still don't know much about in cats.
He said a new test just came out of the USA and he managed to use it, so good timing I guess.
I need to continue with anti-biotics, special cat food and lots of water.
He's put on a tiny bit of weight.
I am taking him for a check up in 1 week.

Trust me, if you feel your vet is not doing enough, go to another one.
The first asshole I saw was so rude and didn't investigate enough, never going there again.
The one I just saw is absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend him, and he was compassionate.

    Yeah, he's slowly coming back.
Gave him some more antibiotics and some dinner.
He is eating slowly and tiny bits but better than nothing and better than a few weeks ago.
Thanks for your kind words once again ;)
