Hey everyone,

I just had a chance to do this now. On 2/13, my boyfriend, John, fell off a roof at work, 20 feet up, landed on his feet and shattered his heels. I guess I'm posting this here to vent, because I certainly can't vent to him! :) It's been a hard few days, he is still in the hospital, he is coming home today or tomorrow. He will need surgery to put things back together, but that won't be for about a week. He will have casts on both legs. Thank god my sister is coming to stay with us and help out while I'm working.

To top it off, we just moved into our new place the day before!!!! So, I have the job of unpacking by myself.

Financially, well, I have to do the best I can. He is self employed, so no disability or anything. No income from him at all. I know we could get help from the state, but that is such a pain in the ass, I'd rather not bother.

Thanks for reading this!

Maybe he's a roofer. Or a construction worker of some sort. It happens. I fell 15ft. off a sizzor lift last year and broke my hand. Just had my boy a month before. Luckily, it was workers comp. To the OP, I hope your BF is OK and that he makes a full recovery. Wouldn't hurt looking into some financial help from the state. You never know what's out there.

  • Ouch. I am a truama/ortho nurse and see this injury more often than you would think. It is usually someone falling off of a ladder (see it a lot around Christmas with people putting lights up on their house). It is a rough recovery, and the wait for the swelling to go down for surgery sucks, but he will get better. With a good orthopaedic Dr. and good physical therapists, and good pain meds...he will get better. It takes time, but he if he is young and healthy, he will be ok. PM me if you want..if you have any questions or anything I may be able to help. Take care.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

oh I figured he was a roofer... but that's what health and safety laws are there for. Don't you have harnesses over there? If that happened in Ireland the site would be closed down until a full investigation was made. Anyone found working at a height without a harness is likely to be immediately thrown off site  I was just wondering if the same laws don't apply over there. Ok, I know accidents happen but with the right health and safety in place, they actually DON'T.

I'm sorry for being blunt and I know the op's going through a bad time right now... but I've worked on two sites where somebody was killed... both of them would be alive if the right health and safety had been followed... so this kinda thing just annoys and saddens me :(

In my situation, I was in a hydraulic lift with safety rails and according to OSHA regs, you don't need to have a harness due to the rails. I managed to lean against the rails and lose my balance and fell over. Personally, I will never get in one again without a harness. If you're not in a lift and your on a ladder or any height over 6 feet, you are required to be tied off. If you get caught without on at that height or greater, you will be thrown off the site.

wow...that sucks! i've was injured once for a long period of time and it was a nightmare. just try to be patient with each other...you're going to want to strangle each other at times...trust me.

but in terms state assistance, if he's entitled, then he should look into it online since he'll have so much time on his hands anyway. every little bit counts and you never know what the next day will bring, so if you get the ball rolling, you'll know whether or not you can get a little help. plus, it's good to keep your mind as active as possible when you can't use your body as much you'd like. little projects will make him feel like he has a purpose. i know it sounds silly, but it helps during times like that.
If nothing is everything, I'll have it all

most people that I've worked with do not even remotely follow OSHA regs. in Vegas, OSHA would show up, tear down the hand made ladders, and as the inspectors were driving away new ladders were being built. here in Idaho we've done a a few skylights and roofs and we never use harnesses.

Way to not contribute in any meaningful way. Like me! With quoting you!
  • owww! i'm so sorry about your boyfriend, i hope he'll mend up quick. good luck to the both of you!
  • I didn't read all the posts because I'm at work now and my time is limited as it is. Thanks to all who posted. He is not a roofer by trade, he is a carpenter, but was finishing up a roof of a porch he had built. He should have had the scaffolding or whatever you call it, and his partner tells him this all the time. He just slipped on a patch of ice. Some shit luck. Trying to get anything from the state of MA is a pain in the ass, but we will try. He already has state insurance, since it's required by law to have health insurance and he has a kid, thank god because we couldn't affored the medical bills!

Surgery on the right foot is next Tuesday morning. Not sure when the left foot is being done.

More later, I have to go and punch in now!
