Pearl Jam is headed back to a studio in Los Angeles to resume work on the band’s ninth studio album, and first since its 2006 self-titled release, according to a new report on Billboard.com. The seminal Seattle rockers – recording outside of their hometown for the first time since 1996’s No Code – are working once again with producer Brendan O’Brien and are confident the album will be released in 2009, without the help (again) of a major label.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament told Billboard.com that the band is thrilled to have O’Brien at the controls once again. The last time O’Brien manned the boards was 1998’s Yield, although – at the band’s request – he did oversee a complete remix of Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten, which is due Mar. 24 in several formats.

“He brings a brutally honest approach to what he thinks is working and what isn't, and it really moves things along,” Ament told Billboard.com. “We don't get waded down with ideas that maybe aren't even that good. He's one of the few people outside of the band that we trust with our music, and we're really, really looking forward to making this record.”

Ament added that the new material is still in its early stages, and that many ideas are still being tossed back and forth between band members. The solidarity and creativity between them, however, keeps getting better and stronger.

"I saw [guitarist] Mike [McCready] last night and we were both talking about this song and that song,” Ament said. “One of the songs we decided would go down a whole step and he was asking me about a chord progression.”

Ament continued, “[Eddie Vedder] put rough vocals on about half the stuff we worked on in December. There's a handful of really great lyrics. Lyrically, that stuff is in the embryonic stage, but there's a handful of lines and a couple of choruses that are just really great. He keeps getting better.”

It sounds like the early stages of a pregnancy. So I guess in nine months we'll see the result of all their hard work. :D:lol: :?

I was thinking about this today. In one of the articles, I believe Mike mentioned that the band has about 19 songs written. I mean, i know that they've had to cut some before (or we wouldn't have Lost Dogs today), but doesn't that seem like a bit much? They also keep mentioning their great excitement, and basically how their creativity is really flowing. The EXTREMELY wishful thinking I've been having has drifted to the fact that Brendan O'Brien worked on Bruce Springsteen's last two albums, Magic and Working on a Dream. If I remember correctly, I read that Bruce had written the songs for Magic, and released it in October 2007, and ideas just kept coming. Brendan then encouraged him to keep writing, and after the Magic tour and everything, Bruce released Working on a Dream just last month, a mere 1 year and 3 months after Magic. Do you think something like this could happen now with Pearl Jam, since they have about 20 songs and ideas are still coming, and after they release this new album we could get a fast turnaround for a new album, like Bruce? I mean, Eddie even mentioned Bruce heading Brian's advice, so this does not at all seem out of the question. Jeez, the thought of this is just giving me shivers. :D

also worked with the boss on the rising and devils and dust. if the band has 20 songs why not do a double disc cd or go one further and do a triple disc

Having 20 songs or whatever songs written for an album isnt actually that many. I know Rick Rubin likes bands to have at least 50 songs written. My band have spent the last month writing and we have about 20. Writing more songs is cool cause (hopefully) you can write a stack of good ones cause every song isnt going to be great.

they usually have that many, or more, ready to go. for the last album i think they had about 25. so i guess we will either be getting lost dogs 2 at some point, or the old stuff will be used for the reissues...i personally doubt we will get a double album...i think if they were going to do that they would have done it by now...but who knows??

Also, when someone like Mike says they have 19 or 20 songs written, he probably means more of like ideas. In other words, not all of the songs have vocals attached the them, some of them may still need a chorus or bridge or something, but they probably do not have 19 finished songs.
