What a shame.
Turbo prop plane coming from Newark crashed into a house killing 50 (I believe) aboard and 1 in the house.
A 9/11 widow was among one of those killed.

Prop planes scare me any how, now I'm reluctant to take one to Toronto next month. (I'm sure I'll take it anyhow)

I'd post a link but I'm posting from my phone, sorry.

  • Prop planes are usually very safe... I worked for US Airways Express like 10 years ago, and I remember a pilot telling me that Dash 8's were the toughest planes he's ever flown and that they were built really well.

Speculation is ice, but it will be interesting to see what went wrong.

  • The crash site is about 3 miles from my house. I was hearing sirens coming from everywhere when I was going to bed last night. I thought it was a bad car crash or something because the roads were pretty slick. Then this morning I heard what happened. That's all anyone is talking about today around here. Very sad day. Kind of scary when it happens so close to home. And I've been on those Continental flights from Newark many times.

as i said.....i didn't personally know her at all, but some colleagues did. no matter what you always feel for those in such a tragedy, but when it hits even closer....someone who worked for your firm, get a message from the metro head partner about it, hearing about her and her husband and son, etc.......just takes it closer still. all these people, lost.....their families and friends, devasted. my heart truly goes out to them all, i cannot imagine suffering such a loss. :( :( :(

    It is horribly tragic...

Dash-8's are generally safe, though...I live across the water from an airport and dash 8s fly over our house all the time...but yeah, it sounds like ice might have been a problem with this most recent crash...it's awful...

Yeah, I fly a LOT for work and I've been on pretty much every kind of plane with every airline. I've flown Dash 8's a lot and while I prefer a jet powered plane (generally quieter and on newer and nicer planes) the Dash 8's have a history of being safe and reliable.
Ice build-up on the wings of any kind of plane is a recipe for disaster, especially one trying to takeoff or land due to the slower speeds, causing less lift on the wings.
