of scams... there are plenty of them. Anything that seems too good to be true, BEFORE replying or sending them any personal details, take a few minutes to google the website. If all you find is them advertising jobs and yet no official website, then that's not a good sign. Another sign is usually their email address... if it's hotmail, googlemail, yahoo, etc. be wary. If you can't find anything on the company, then google their address and then google their phone number.

IF it's too good to be true, it USUALLY is. If you're not sure there are people you can contact who will be able to investigate further.

Also, a new one apparently is a company will want you to sign up on their site and fill out an application form there... this can give them all your personal details and your password. So if a jobsite redirects you to the site of the company... do a little research before giving them all this information which will enable them to do whatever the fuck they want with your identity.

If the money seems too good to be true, feel free to call them (careful that the number provided is not a premium rate number... maybe google it first) and ask whether it's basic or commission based... I did that today and the girl wouldn't answer me  . Ask if any training will be paid for by the company (cos often the scam involves you having to pay for your own training) and also ask if they have a company website where you can learn more about them. If they're not comfortable giving out this information, there's something up. Any legit company will be more than happy to provide you with these details as they will see it as you using your initiative. And NEVER EVER give them any money... or provide bank details without being sure everything's above board first.

It's sick that there are so many people willing to take advantage of the unemployed.. so just be careful with your personal details and you should be fine... and... happy job hunting :D

Good tips Helen. Here in the US, you can go to the library and there are books that have company data, which is public record. I like to do a little research before applying to any company. Of course, if the company is new, there may not be any information out there on them. Following your tips is a good idea. Another thing you can do is to call the Better Business Bureau and check out the reputation. If it's bad, you probably don't want to work there.

thank you :D of course it can be easy to fall into applying for job after job and doing so mindlessly... and then you're redirected to a site so you apply quickly so you can get back to applying for more jobs :) but it's best to be careful... also read over your cover letter even if it's the same one you send out all the time... I've made a couple of small but SERIOUSLY stupid mistakes  e.g. I said I was 'an good communicator' cos I musta went back and changed good from something else but never noticed the an. And I made a mistake in my phone number to another company. Not bad 2 mistakes from probably a couple of hundred applications but still, there's no point applying at all if you're gonna send them a pile of crap.
