i'm actually thinking about starting a vinyl collection...my families got a bunch, but they are in my bro's custody. i was either thinking i would start my own from scratch or build on the other collection...anywho...i was wondering what the easiest way to go about buying vinyl? should i try to get lucky at pawn shops, thrift stores, and record stores that sell LP's? or should i deal with ebay bids and paying high prices?

any PJ must haves?

should i listen to the coppies? or keep them protected? or should i buy 2 copies and play one and then have the other one for collecting?

any of you selling/trading?

  • Whew, its not an easy task to start a PJ vinyl collection. Prices can be high on ebay, but if you are going for as many as you can as fast as you can, ebay is the way to go. Thriftstores won't turn up any PJ, but record stores do sometimes, especially the independant ones, but it could take awhile.
if you are patient enough, the re-releases through the 10 club over the next 3 years is another low cost option. The albums ten, vs., vitalogy, binaural, and avacado are all worth listening to on vinyl! Actually all their albums sound great on vinyl if its played on quality gear. I bet Into The wild is incredibly great, too, but I cannot get myself to open it to play it. Ten is pretty cheap on ebay, vs. and vitalogy are 25+ dollars, no code and yield are 35-45 dollars. Binaural and rearviewmirror are the most expensive standard lp's. Benny hall is $600+ and soldier field is 300+ dollars.

Truthfully, I'd say wait a while. Pearl Jam have after all announced plans to re-issue their whole catalog - maybe they'll re-release all the albums on vinyl, who knows? They did for Ten, that's a good start.

Bump... ULonesome, I responded to your private message, but for whatever reason, my response is just sitting in the outbox, rather than the Sent Messages section. Basically - I'm interested in your copy of Yield. Let me know :)

I was able to hunt down most of the vinyl from record stores and shows. I got everything used, which seems to be the trick as far as price goes. Many people buy them to "collect" and never open them so used are far cheaper. Everything I got was between $15-$25. Lost Dogs was actually my toughest find. I found it once and paid $50. I'm still missing Binaural and had to do eBay for Into the Wild.

Check out http://www.vinylcollective.com and its message board. Great resource for vinyl listening and collecting. There are a few PJ fans there myself included. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to just Pearl Jam vinyl...a lot of bands are now easily available in the format.

(This has been a shameless plug as I am one of the mods on the VC message board) ;)

Look on craigslist for your area.. I have snagged some vinyl that way(not PJ). Some people just want the stuff out of the house and don't really care who takes it and its usually free.

Also, as a garbage man I tend to come across people tossing collections out all the time, mind you alot of them are musty and nothing I would ever listen to but every now and then I get a good ones, So far this month I grabbed 4 Dead Albums, U2 War and Blondie Parallel Lines they all just need to be cleaned up and they are good to go.

    happy hunting
