Foucault's buddies, Peter Mulvey and Chris Smither. Also, JF's wife, Kris Delmhorst. One of my favorites. Foucault, Mulvey and Delmhorst did a one-off album of mostly covers called Redbird.
+1 on the Gillian Welch suggestion too. David Rawlings is a god.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.
Live at Massey Hall... maybe the best live album ever! Just him and his acoustic.
funny you mention that. my dad actually burnt me a copy of this just the other day and i love it, and that actually prompted me to make this thread!
If you like that, check out Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan. There's a thread somewhere around here ("An evening with greg dulli and mark lanegan" I think) with links to downloads of a few shows they did just the two of them with acoustic guitars.
I caught them at Lolla in 2007. They were amazing!!
Saw them at Coachella.....yes....AMAZING!
Yeah, I saw them at the Showbox Market a while back and was blown away! I have no idea how Gabriela plays like that -- using her guitar in such a rhythmic and percussive fashion. Very unique and cool!

Monte Montgomery can play the hell out of an acoustic guitar, but it's definitely not mellow.
