How do you define family if you are married or live with someone in spousal-like relationship?

Say you're thinking, "I really need my family right now". Do you mean you need to be with the loved ones in your household, or do you feel you need to be with your parent(s), sibling(s) and/or other close relative(s)?

If I say family, I mean my household. If I need my mom or sister, I say I need my mom or my sister.

Semantics, I suppose, but sometimes certain words dig a little deeper than others.

I'm assuming you mean married or committed relationship but no kids. I've been married for many years and don't have kids but I think of myself and my husband as a family. Sometimes I extend that to include my mom, sister, or even my in-laws. It depends on the circumstances.

  • well when you get married you "leave the things of a child behind" so you and your missus are deemd family.

My family is huge and ever growing. When I need my family it means:

    - my grandma, my brothers, my sister-in-law, my nephew, my sister-in-law's parents and sister, my sister, her husband, their three daughters, my very best friends, the little Mexican exchange student who lived with us, my childhood neighbours, and my housemate's family, and my one best friend's family... And to a slightly lesser extent, my dad and his wife.

Probably other people too, but that's off the top of my head, which is most true. To me, family is who you turn to when you need someone, and under different circumstances I would turn to all of the above.

Wow, looking at that list I suddenly feel extremely blessed. :D

Pfft... hahaha. Thanks. I needed the chuckle.

Thanks for the responses. I can understand including anyone you would turn to in a time of need as "family".
I like to think of my husband as who I would turn to first. Though, I was temporarily miffed when he decided he needed to be with his extended family instead of me as we are trying to figure out a really tough situation. Actually, I still think it sucks, but I'm not as mad.

As adults, our families are our spouses and children. Our parents are the in-laws. :?

    hmmmmm...interesting query!
i can't say i've ever referred to my husband as my family, altho if someone asked about my family, i would always say it's just my husband and me. so sure, i think of him as being my family, without ever really calling him such. :P when i talk of my family, i usually mean parents/sisters....and then extended family being aunts/cousins, etc.

as to thinking 'i really need to be with my family right now'...i just don't think like that. i think 'i need to be with my husband, my mother, my sister'.....always individuals. i have a small family, and only about 3 members who are close emotionally and physically. i have a large extended family whom i love....but i don't 'depend' on them for anything....it's always hubby, mom and 1 sister.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
