Quadrophenia Vinyl

Found a used copy of Quadrophenia on vinyl a few weeks ago. A steal at $7. But it's odd - the first record has Side One (I Am the Sea - The Punk...) and Four (Dr. Jimmy - Love Reign..), while the second record is Sides 2 & 3. It's a pain in the ass to have to switch LPs twice.
Anyway, anyone know if this is this normal, or did I get a weird pressing?

  • no, it's very common. its just the way the lenght of the sides worked out on the vinyl. lots of two LP sets are like that.

Thanks. I'm new to the vinyl world, and don't know much at all.

Track Records always did this. See also Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Who's Tommy. This would go for US versions, too.

  • ... and here's why. Turntables used to have long spindles which held more than one album at a time. The idea was to put on both albums and start the player. It dropped the first album (side one) and then when it was finished, the second album (side two) dropped and played. You then flipped them over and played sides three and four the same way. I know this because I'm old enough to have listened to a spanking brand new, newly-released copy of Quadrophenia probably a couple of hundred times in this way. :geek:

  • I just unpacked my groceries and listened to The Who LIVE AT LEEDS and it dawned on me that Pete Townshend is good at the guitar. :o MY GOD the way he lays down the riffs at this show is insane. They are played so cleanly. They sound fantastic, so chunky and fat. I love it. The magic bus and young man especially. WOW, play it loud.

(still need quadrophenia on vinyl :( )

oh yeah i remember dad showing me that years and years ago, there we're like extra "arms' to divide em i think?

but yeah i got Quadrophenia, Tommy & the tommy soundtrack, live at leeds, who are you, big meaty beaty (or whatever it's called), who's next & who came first on vinyl 8-)

sort or related, the weirdest thing i've seen on a double LP is the Sam Roberts band's 'chemical city' there's side A, B & C, but nothing on the D side, no grooves or nothing!

I have noticed that on a few records. I always thought, if there was a side by side 2 record changer, you could load it with sida a and b up, then the whole thing would flip leaving c and d in the appropriate places.

Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta takes up 5 sides of vinyl, and they etched a design on the blank side. Check it out.

  • My local record shop had the 200 gram version for $60. I bet it sounds amazing but I couldn't pull the trigger. That is one record I can never seem to find in the used bin

I think I lucked out. Every couple weeks I go up to the used book shop that has a few records. It was in the 'just in" bin. Pretty banged up cover, and definitely played a lot, but mostly good. Haven't listened to much else since I got it - and that's before I found a mint Vs. for $30.
  • In my few years of collecting vinyl I have NEVER found a PJ record used. My local shop always has TEN instock but finding any other record forget about it. But I still go there every few days thinking there a slim chance that a Binaural is there for $9.99. ha ha ha ya right!

Haha nice. I'm really hoping I can find this album at a decent price sometime. I want to buy Bedlam as well, but it's $60 where I live. A bit too steep imo.

Bedlam is great. I got it for $40, and it comes with a record that shaped like the the oiuja board deal(thing that moves over the board). That songs not that great or even good, but its a pretty neat little record to have.

The black and red vinyl is cool, as is the orange and white of Amputechture. I have the KoL Because of the Time red vinyl.

I just kinda realized, I love the crazy colored vinyl. What other more common albums has it?

and there is probably a good reason why. I've never heard the vinyl, but I have high expectations. I love the CD. I found a sealed 200 gram pressing at my local record store too but it was for $40...didn't have the cash for it, and haven't been back since...I hope it's still there...

Vs. was released as a limited blue pressing that I've seen on the internet a couple times...

They should put out a condensed single-lp version....call it Schitzophrenia

    (FYI: Quadrophenia = double schitzophrenia!)

Yep. I purchased Quad when it was released in 73. That black and white cover was the antithesis of album cover art at the time. Discussions like this make me feel like I need to start looking for an Old Ladies Home. ;)

I have 3 copies of this album that I've bought used. Love this album and I haven't spent over 10 dollars on any of em. Back in the later 70's a good friend of mine bought me the Soundtrack album of Quadrophenia for XMAS. I think of her everytime I see it.

One of my top ten albums.

That is spot on, also one of the reasons why it is so hard to find original copies in great condition. I seem to remember that when one record was on top of the other they would sometimes slip or revolve at different speeds, causing two sides of the record to sort of grind together. I can rememeber parties my parents had where a bundle of 10 or more 45's would be put on the spindle and as soon as one finished another would drop onto the turntable, this was great until a slightly out of shape disc dropped and the whole thing went tits up!

I feel guilty sayin this, but I am a guitar player and have never owned Band of Gypsys. I'll have to pick it up next time I'm at my local.
