I don't think their album art is going to suffer...they appreciate artwork too much to let that happen (I mean, really..."Avacado" was bizarrely great.).

However, I do feel they are going to do some moves that are going to alienate a lot of people. The mobile phone thing on last summer's tour kind of irked a few people (I think it was through Verizon.).

I do think the band is going to do multiple releases ala Smashing Pumpkins "Zeitgeist" or U2's new release. Corgan and the Pumpkins released a different version of each album through ITtunes, Best Buy, and Target (maybe one or two others?). Each release had a different, unreleased track (although it was being released). And the ITunes release allowed fans to buy presale tickets for their tour.

while i don't disagree that they may do some new marketing things this time around, Zeitgeist or U2, or any other number of releases lately, are all getting those "exclusive" type offers in different retail venues, and that is mostly due to the record companies attempting to give an extra incentive to people to BUY the album.

and yes, i was one of the alienated people with the verizon thing...i now have a pearl jam shirt with a corporate name on the sleeve...totally sucks

although, i shouldn't say too much...i don't want to lose my sticky status!!

Pearl Jam is about to hit the studio for a two-week session in Los Angeles with producer Brendan O'Brien as it continues work on its ninth studio album, which the band plans to self-release in the United States.

After laying down some instrumental beds last summer, additional demos were put to tape in December, and the band's non-singing members formulated another batch of material during a recent trip to Montana.

Frontman Eddie Vedder "put rough vocals on about half the stuff we worked on in December," bassist Jeff Ament tells Billboard.com. "There's a handful of really great lyrics. Lyrically, that stuff is in the embryonic stage, but there's a handful of lines and a couple of choruses that are just really great. He keeps getting better."

"I saw [guitarist] Mike [McCready] last night and we were both talking about this song and that song," he continues. "One of the songs we decided would go down a whole step and he was asking me about a chord progression."

This will be the first time Pearl Jam has spent significant time recording outside Seattle since 1996's "No Code," some of which was tracked with O'Brien in Chicago and New Orleans between touring. The band is confident the new album will be out in 2009.

"There's certainly been groups of songs that we've recorded very quickly," Ament says. "When we went to Atlanta and New Orleans, we could knock out two, three, four songs in the same amount of days. We did the same thing in Chicago. I'm kind of approaching it with the idea that it'll work out like those sessions did."

Ament says the band is very excited about the return of O'Brien, who hasn't worked on a full Pearl Jam album since 1998's "Yield" but has recently overseen a complete remixing of the band's 1991 debut, "Ten," which will be reissued March 24 on Epic/Legacy.

"He brings a brutally honest approach to what he thinks is working and what isn't, and it really moves things along," he says. We don't get waded down with ideas that maybe aren't even that good. He's one of the few people outside of the band that we trust with our music, and we're really, really looking forward to making this record."

The new album will be the follow-up to Pearl Jam's self-titled 2006 release for J Records, which has sold 704,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Dropping down their tuning. I was wondering when they would around to doing that. Sure would help Ed out.

Any way to explain what the means to a non-musician? Are there 2 song examples to contrast dropped down tuning to... uh... lifted up tuning?

And to whoever asked earlier, I just don't like the idea of music on phones. I was pissed off when I ran my cell phone through the wash and they couldn't give me one without a camera in it... I just want a phone. It weirds me out the way we're all carrying around mini-computers anymore. And it seems a shit way to hear an album the first time. Call me crotchety... I still listen to every cd I buy on my stereo first. I only listen to digital music when I'm walking around in the city.

He struggles to hit the high notes nowadays. Dropping everything a half a step or whole step could help with that.

Ah, listen to Life Wasted on the album or the 2006 boots and then go and listen to it on the Bonaroo 2008 boot. They changed the key lower.

The only studio song I can think of that is a half step down is Of the Girl. They use alternate tunings a lot and drop D some but rarely if ever drop the whole guitar down.

Lots of band play a half step down - Van Halen with Roth, Alice in Chains, Metallica on the Load records.

Yeah! Nothing wrong with dropping tuning if your voice fits it.

so it sounds like they are recording again, which is pretty awesome. but doesn't mr. cohen almost make it sound like the band members are showing up whenever they want and recording their parts? at least mr. vedder isn't there while the band is recording. is that normal? i thought they worked most of this shit together, except for ten, when a lot of the music was written before ed was brought into the group.
