A strange Robert Palmer situation

I was at a party once.
A Friend of a Friend kind of thing...
Anyways ...This friend of a friend had a husband who had like everything ROBERT PALMER (Simply Irresistable)had ever released...

He went on and on about Robert Palmer and proceeded break down the career of Robert Palmer to my wife and I over the course of this very strange night.

And If that wasn't enough...He proceeded to play us obscure Robert Palmer tracks and albums...It was a really fucking strange thing to have happen, because I'd never heard any of this shit before in my life and never really had any reason to. This certainly wasn't something I expected to happen that night. And I really wasn't prepared for this weird guy and his weird music.

But Being a huge music fan...open minded...I'm cool with things like this
I mean...I find it interesting that this guy was so into someone...so obscure and strange. It's not everyday that you meet someone who is into ROBERT PALMER...you know what I mean?

So anyways...
I was really hoping to find some kind of common ground or at least a new apreciation for what this guy was on about...

Well I didn't!!
It was fucking god aweful and terrible...The worst music I've ever heard in my life. Just complete garbage.
There is not a word or phrase in the English Language to describe how vile and aweful this music was.

Anyone else find themselves in this kind of situation?
Where someone is like Rat Fuck Crazy over weird music and they try to turn you onto it?

What is the weirdest music someone has tried to get you to listen to?

My brother is a lot younger than me, he was 5 when I moved out of the house. When I was in high school, I used to babysit for a kid down the block that would later become my brothers best friend.. best man in my bro's wedding, etc.

EVERY time I see this kid, he bombards me with PLATINUM BLONDE facts; he talks about them nonstop, how great they are! That in itself is bizarre.. throw in the fact that I used to change his diapers and he's rediculously hot now... it's crazy!

I had a friend in high school that liked Spyro Gyro. Actually, they were his favorite band. He was a bit sheltered.
  • I do have a friend who always comes up with some off-the-wall shit that he thinks is absolutely great. "Dude you gotta hear this!" and I listen I am horrified that I am actually friends with someone who would think it is good. I'm sorry, I can't think of any examples right now...mainly because he has never turned me on to anything that has stuck with me...but I've known the dude since junior high and he has always had a little different perception of what good music is than I do.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

I also have this friend that is really into progressive rock music...which I can't fucking stand.

Everytime I'm over at this guy's house, he plays me these horrific albums by:

    Emerson Lake and Palmer
    Genesis
    Yes

Then there's some band called "Time Shift" who he's totally got a stiffy for

Time Shift is the worst band I've ever heard.

They are lame with a capital "L"

Their sound is best described as "A Steaming pile of Dog Shit at Beethoven's Doorstep"

It's just the worst shit you'll ever hear in your life.

I'm only friends with this guy because he's a great bass player...

Everytime I leave his house I put on a Ramones album just to detox.

There are no horrific albums by Yes, Genesis and ELP. :ugeek:

I am the weird friend that tries to get people to listen to my music. Sorry, we just like it so much that we want to share the joy it brings us in hopes you will feel that joy too.

why are you saying sorry? I'm sure everyone that has posted in this thread has pushed pearl jam to the point of annoying others....

No doubt I'm guilty of Pushing Pearl Jam; so much so that my wife cringes everytime she hears the words "Pearl" and "Jam" in a sentence.

I think musical tastes very so much from person to person. I'm a huge music fan and pride myself on the fact that I'm open to so many different types of music and can sit back and be in a country mood one day, blues the next, and switch to World War II era jazz and follow that up with a weird record from the 60's. I'm open to alot of things and it's really interesting to find someone else that's into eclectic music.

But you ever meet someone that's just into horendous music? No matter how hard you try...You just can't get into it?

    That's what I'm getting at.

I wonder if the person had Aspergers? They can stay on one topic and not notice normal social cues that they might be boring someone.

I think it's pretty enjoyable to have an encyclopedic knowledge of a particular artist. However, as the previous poster intimates, there are social situations where you wait for head nods and a bit of conversation, before revealing your knowledge of a subject a bit at a time, in response to interest. Otherwise you come across as a bit Aspergic.
