From the interviews I have read this is a hopeful or uplifting record. Does this surprise anyone? Sure Obama's president, but the wars still going on, and the economy is the worst its been since 1929. Doesnt make sense to me.

Avocado was one of those albums that comes along in a person's life at just the right time. One of those albums you know couldnt have been written about or for you, but feels like it was.

At that time, I was heavily involved in the activist scene, specifically the antiwar movement. Politics was my life. The war in iraq weighed on my mind daily, every second of every day I was aware of the war.

The album encapsulated what i felt. Essentially it was an album, where every single song was about how people were dealing with the unbelieveably overwhelming world we live in. From living to the fullest with no regrets ala Life Wasted, to taking drugs ala Severed Hand, feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed in Unempoyable, or crying and a sense of urgency in Army Reserve. The last song Inside Job, seemed to be about finding yourself before changing the world

I moved on, and now have a zest for life despite everything in the world thats going on.

WHat is the theme of the new record>

Excellent post and way to go on your activsim against the war.

I know the new album will have at least a couple more songs about how Eddie sees the mistakes of the war and our economic crisis and our how it all conflicts with many of our ideals. And I know those songs will rock!

I have a feeling the rest of the band will put forth even more of a songwriting effort than before and we will get an updated Riot Act/Avocado. These songs will be quirky, but they will rock.

But I think the overall theme of the new record will be about tainted peanut butter....

I have a pretty good feeling its going to be:

    Avocado+ No Code= new album.

Rolling stone says so far it still has the kicks and energy of the last record, and the members said its different/ a departure. Sounds like No Code and Avocado to me.

Will it be about "change"? - even if that sounds awfully worn-out. Anyway, I'd love to hear some "developing"-songs like Inside Job or Present Tense.

I hope there aren't any contrived themes. When bands try and sound profound, they almost always sound silly. Genuine profundity often comes about by serendipity, through honest expression. I just hope we get an album of good music, because ultimately, that's all that matters.

Themes to an album are not a bad thing. See Pink Floyd and The Who.

I'm really looking forward to them traveling in a new direction like they did with No Code back in 96... I loved he rolling stone article, the only thing that kind of upset me was how ed said matt's song had a chance to be a very weird artsy and creative track with a nice groove and then he chopped it down...Just leave it!!

I hope the theme up the album is matt cameron becomming a better drummer...His pads are very dull and this has been evident in Binaural, Riot Act, and even PJ... Pre Cameron this band had a great groove and raw sound that just bled through the pounding drums. Come on Matt, tap that snare band those cymbals, get some crazy rthyms, get pounding and get groooovy!

On the contrary, I think rock operas and concept albums generally suck.

I agree with Fins... Ed's at his best when he's in Springsteen mode, telling stories about people we can all relate to. He's at his weakest when he tries to write abstractly profound lyrics.
