Ticketmaster and Live Nation Possibly Merging (pj mention)

edited 2009 10 in The Porch
ticketmaster continues to buy up it's competition. hopefully, this will get blocked--otherwise we are allowing another ma bell to be built, but i doubt this one would ever get broken up.

I wonder if there will ever come a time when artists will band together to take on TM (and LN) in court again. Do you think that consumers would support acts that had to go off the beaten path to play for their fans (if there is even a location to do it in! )? Unlike last time

I thought they we're always ONE?

they're buying up and merging with competitors, which will eventually build a true monopoly in every sense of the word. because of the stranglehold they have with their contracts with most major venues, some argue they already are a monopoly.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but Live Nation is even worse than Ticketmaster. Their fees are just as high (if not higher) and their site is awful. Long live the TenClub.

Yea.. but at least you still have a chance of getting tickets through LN before the scalpers. The last handful of shows that I've tried to get tickets to have all been impossible to get tickets for through TM.

I doubt that.... Scalpers still have a hand up on us. I agree - the LN site sucks big !

Hahaha... On Live Nation's Board Of Directors is Ari Emanuel. His brother is Obama's Chief Of Staff, Rahm Emanuel (formerly with Bill Clinton administration)... Well, I bet this keeps Congress and the White House from stopping these two monopolies from creating a SUPER-monopoly. ...the fans get fucked again. :)

This is the why Live Nation is a little better........imo.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A New Jersey congressman is demanding an investigation after Bruce Springsteen fans were unable to buy tickets from Ticketmaster's Web site — which then promptly offered them more expensive tickets from a subsidiary.

U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell of Paterson wants the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to investigate possible conflicts of interest involving Ticketmaster and a ticket reseller it owns, TicketsNow.

When tickets for Springsteen's Meadowlands show went on sale Monday, some fans got an error message on their computer screen that shut them out from buying tickets. A TicketsNow ad offered tickets for hundreds of dollars more than face value.

A Ticketmaster spokesman says only a few fans reported problems

How this is not an antitrust issue is beyond me.

What I think should happen, is for record labels to start diversifying and doing what ticketmaster does to create some more competition.

    well it's official

Live Nation and Ticketmaster in merger deal

    2 hrs 40 mins ago

LOS ANGELES – Two of the biggest forces in the entertainment business are joining up.

Concert promoter Live Nation Inc. and ticketing giant Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc. said Tuesday morning that they plan an all-stock merger of equals. The combined company will be called Live Nation Entertainment.

Under the deal, approved by both companies' boards, Ticketmaster shareholders will receive 1.384 shares of Live Nation stock for each share of Ticketmaster they hold. The companies estimated the value of the combined business at about $2.5 billion and said the deal will help them save about $40 million annually.

"Being able to put Live Nation and Ticketmaster into an equal partnership will allow the companies to get through this difficult period and be able to expand live entertainment options to audiences throughout the world," Ticketmaster Chairman Barry Diller said in a statement.

But regulatory experts have said the deal could be delayed by an antitrust review because of the companies' dominant role in the entertainment business.

Ticketmaster sells tickets for more than 80 percent of the major arenas and stadiums in the U.S., according to concert tracking firm Pollstar. Live Nation is the world's No. 1 concert promoter and owns more than 140 venues. It has comprehensive deals to the tours of such artists as Madonna, Jay-Z, U2, Nickelback and Shakira — and recently developed its own ticketing service.

The ticketing-service move brought the companies closer to an all-out scramble for ticketing deals. A merger heads that off, but experts say snuffing out that competition could draw close scrutiny from regulators wary of the company building a concert industry monopoly.

On the other hand, the deal could end up benefiting concertgoers by giving the combined company more bargaining clout with artists, potentially reducing performers' stakes in ticket sales and thus lowering ticket prices.

The deal already has at least one prominent detractor, however.

Bruce Springsteen, already furious with Ticketmaster for directing fans to a subsidiary selling tickets for above-face value, recently posted a statement on his Web site saying a deal with Live Nation could end up "returning us to a near-monopoly situation in music ticketing."
