The greatest man to ever put a pair of ice skates on will have his memorable night this Tuesday February 3rd, 2009. #9 Adam Graves was my childhood hero, and still is the man I look up to. I will be there at 6PM at Madison Square Garden wearing his jersey proudly. By greatest man, I don't mean player I mean...MAN. But as for player, the hardest working player ever. His hits were even harder, never put up with anyone messing around with his team, dropped the gloves when he had to...and scored the most clutch goals ever. His 52 goals was a New York Ranger record until Jagr broke it a few years ago. If it wasn't for him players like Mark Messier would never have been as good as they were with the team. His charity work has been unbelievable, helping out the less fortunate kids non-stop.

  • I did like Adam Graves as a player and how he never took a shift off... but as a Penguin fan, I can never forgive him for that bush-league, baseball bat chop that broke Lemieux's hand in the '92 playoff series. I was never so happy to see a team get knocked out of the playoffs then that Rangers team.

No, in todays modern era of hockey, Ovi is incredible...hes gretzky but also the biggest hardest hitting son of a bitch...i mean he hasnt accomplished anything so far that beats gretzky but if this stays for another 5-10 years, he will join those names

same way if lebron keeps this up, he will be MJ

apples and oranges. all these players played in different eras, and it just isn't practical to start comparing them. gretzky scored 92 goals in one season. no one is ever going to touch that simply because with todays game, goalies are far superior to those that played in the 80's and teams then didn't have the defensive systems and styles of play they have now.

and definitley don't start comparing lebron to MJ / ovechkin to gretzky until they start winning championships.

Loved him as part of the Kid Line after Edmonton got him in the aftermath of the Gretzky trade. Have fun...maybe Eddie will give him a shout out during the next Garden concert.

  • maybe it was me looking through some old photos of Graves, but the Rangers really need to bring back both the navy and white "statue of liberty" jerseys...those were fantastic.

That's awesome.... I love nights when they honour players. To feel the history and the impact of the team, not to mention how great it must be for the players. :)

In my opinion, the greatest man to ever put skates on was Le Gros Bill. You don't get classier than Jean Beliveau. :D

Ha you just don't understand. It was never about the stats, although he did score 52 goals one season. He was the most clutch player. Scored the game winning goal in the 97 playoffs, scored in game 7 against the devils and vancouver in 94. He was the toughest player there, he's deffinantly one of the most, if not THE most loved player for Ranger fans.

Read that and you will understand.

I cried last night at the ceremony, not gonna lie. To see my favorite player EVER in any sport be retired and address the crowd one more time brought tears. He deserves this so much, its about time he got his recognition. No one could ever touch him.

i am sure as hell not arguing with you, the guy was incredible.

but leetch got the regulation goal in game 7 against the devils in 94.

i shed a tear at richter, messier and leetchs ceremonies too. it's impossible not to get caught up in the emotion on those nights. unbelievable.

I dont disagree with your points one bit ...actually I agree with them.
I also do believe in "the peoples' champion"...and I think the 94 team was great and probably saved hockey in the eastern states.

But I still dont think his number should be retired ..
As Bill Parcells said, "You are what your record says you are."
(all this coming from the guy whos team retired Mike Vernons number before Theo's (1088 points) ...)
I guess good guys do finish first ..

There are some players that just cannot be statistically represented.... The players that just play with their hearts and put about 2000% into everything... You've gotta respect them. Not that it will ever happen, but I would feel the same way if Montreal retired Steve Begin's number. A complete warrior, gentleman, and willing to sacrifice everything to get the job done. I will respect him forever for when he came back 10 minutes after going face first into the boards... He had forty stitches, four teeth missing and had to wear a cage, but he was back and still throwing his body around, :D
