Long Road revelations and ramblings

Holy crap. I just listened to Long Road with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with headphones. A million emotions scrambled through my head in that 5:28. I wondered what the sound recording engineer was thinking when Ed let out the first lines into the mic in the studio. I wondered who was the first person to hear that song that wasn’t in the band, and how it made them feel. But most of all it occurred to me how luck I am, or how lucky we all are…to wake up everyday, live life, be free, and have amazing music fill our hearts everyday. I will never take this band for granted. Eddies voice is like butter in this song, filled with so much emotion and passion. I really brings a tear to my eye.

in my opinion, the version of Long Road with Nusrat is the most emotional and intriguing version. my favorite version hands down. i really enjoy how both singers allow their voices to become another instrument and breathe life and space into this version.

I love the 10 minute live version with Rahat Nusrat.. Just incredible..
  • Definitely an amazing version of a beautiful, emotional song. Another great version is San Diego 2006 with the story behind it.

In 11 shows, I haven't seen Long Road live yet. It's one of the songs I hope to hear most.
  • It means so much to me I had the lyrics tattooed on my back, for my Grandmother
I will scream my lungs out till it fills this room.

Is that the story of how they wrote the song? I just read that the other day on here.

It is crazy live. They opened with it in West Plam Beach one year. I was just walking into the ampitheather and was so nervous about getting to my seat late. I walked down the ramp and heard that first chord...still sends shivers down my spine.

It's also crazy how many different versions of this song there are...the 10 minute one with Nusrat, acoustic, electric, solo, the one from the 911 tribute with Neil on the keys...so diverse.

yep, here's a video of it. it takes a few minutes for the story to really get going, but it's definitely worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuTkrI7xJlY

You should listen the Groundwork Benefit show from Seattle '01, he harmonizes with Ed and its trance-like, long version, real good
I met my wife here...you can too! Don't lose hope!

Yes this version is good, but I don't know why he left out the last verse.( in the studio 5:28 version) Unfortunatley that is my favorite verse of the song. I still like it but....

    Great movie too.

long road from the 9-11 tribute with neil young is better than any version i've heard. the way neil sings the final few lyrics is just chilling.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
    Sammi: Wanna just break up?

My favorite version too. So heartfelt and best of the tribute IMO. My 2 brothers, one NYFD and other NYPD, who lost many friends that day, absolutely love this version as well.

Call me biased because I was there, but I think the version they opened their last Webley Arena show with, is probably the best version I've heard. Ed improvised with his vocals and it was absolutely sublime. I recorded it with my camera, I'll have to dig it out and put a link up.
  • During the version with Rahat Nusrat....

Eddie looks at Nusrat during the performance and thinks "That guy is INSANE"! (in a good way) :)
