pay google money. It used to be as simple as what you put in your meta heading, but now it's pay to play for the most part.

Yup, I pay google maybe $100 a month on advertising. Trying to see what I can do to make my listing move up more naturally too. :)

SC54115 is right. but you don't pay google, you pay companies to do it for you. Ask about SEO.
sorry couldn't help more. my bro was explaining it to me, but I could pick up enough to repeat it. its a process. he did say to check your title, description, and your header...the meta tags in your header.

anybody here tried AdWords for a month or more? if so, how was it? I am considering using it to advertise my business.

also, anybody have info on promo codes for it? would like to try it for a month before forking over more advertising money.

    thanks.

I use it. It works well for my business, but it depends on what your business is.

People are often searching for a few particular artists, and when they type in their names, my website pops up on adwords. Same with some of the services we provide. It's definitely generated more income than we've spent, but I have high-ticket items. If you're a hallmark store or a sandwich shop, definitely not the way to go.

What kind of business are you? We're an art gallery and frame shop.

CJMST3K: I realize this is months later, but I just noticed the thread. Did you ever get any help on improving your results? My friend does SEO as his gig. I can put you in contact with him and let you take it from there. He'll either be able to do what you're looking for within your budget, or he won't. Can't hurt to ask! PM me if you're interested.

I'd say it would be very good for you. One client would pay for months and months of adwords costs.

I'd say that if you are offering a product that is highly searched on google, then it's worth it. Like "Picture Framing Boca Raton Florida" or something. Or "traffic ticket lawyer camden nj". Or for us we put certain artist's names on google adwords that a lot of people look up, regardless of location. If you are a "wedding photographer" in a certain area, then yes it can work for you. But if you are trying to sell art-photos, unless people search for you by name, then I don't think that would work well.

Either way, you definitely need a website. You can find relatively inexpensive web hosts who also allow you to build your own website for a cheap monthly fee.

also, google adwords works on a bidding system. if no one in your area is bidding for a certain search term, then it'll only be like 5 cents per click. If you have stiff competition, you'll probably have to bid 50cents or $1 per click for them to place you well in the adwords. If you bid low and there's a bunch of other people advertising on the same search term, you'll be so far down on the right, people will not find you.

Adwords = the paid ads on the right side of the page - costs per click on your ad
Natural search = the search results on the left side of the page

You need to work on both - but mostly on the natural to have a good, optimized website.

Google tells you how - but you have to register for the webmaster tools and input your site URL. Once you do - there is instant information about what googlebot sees on your website and what you can do to improve your search. It'll tell you what pages have poor tags, which have no tags, and which have repeat tags...which pages are clicked on the most and lots of other cool information. There are a few things that you may need help with like sitemaps and editing your meta tags, but for the most part, it's doable assuming you're at all web savy.

Also be sure to check out Google Analytics and Google Adwords. And send your sitemaps to all the search engines, not just Google.

You can get a free local listing, however, they will try to sell you a $9.95/month package to add extra info to your ad.

Hey I am a web designer/graphic designer so maybe some of my SEO tips will help - I give my clients this same info. First paying money to anyone does not give ANY guarantee that your going to come up high on search engine rankings. BUT if it is working for you and your happy with the ROI, then go for it. Its hit or miss and can depend on your industry and the nature of your business.

    Some quick tips:

    1. Search engines LOVE constantly changing content - so update your site with fresh info once a week - like news, or feeding in an RSS feed for example. When your site is updated w/ new content, it gets re-indexed.

    2. Title Tag, Keywords & Descriptions - This is something you or or web designer should know to do - it is standard practice w/ every site I do. Your Page titles, Keywords, and Descriptions should directly relate to the content on your page - so they change from page to page. Also limit keywords and don't go overboard (it can be easy to do that). :) Pay attention to your site statistics and see what words are being searched.

    3. Links Links Links! The more links from RELEVENT external websites back to yours is key to how google ranks pages of importance. The more links back to you the better! This is why you often see website links in signatures on forums sometimes.

These are the top 3 things you should always do. But it is also good to register your site in the search engine directories for yahoo and google and a few others...and ESPECIALLY local listings!

Here's a link to my favorite graphic design forum resource - it's where the pros are. Here's our "sticky" on SEO: http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum ... hp?t=37114

I really hope this helps, and best of luck! If you have any further questions please ask! :)
