I just got a top, a shirt, a jacket, 2 suit jackets, a dress, a pair of trousers, a pair of shoes, a hard back book... ALL for less than £50  . The three jackets cost me £8.50 in a charity shop... and they look like they're brand new.

Gotta love a bargain :P

  • You can find some good stuff at thrift shops. :)

I'm only shopping in charity shops and sales from now on. I'm WELL kitted out now if I ever get a bloody job to wear them to  I wanna go to an interview now... cos I'll look INCREDIBLY smart  .

It's good cos there are about 7 or 8 charity shops in the town I'm living in... and I think they rotate their stock every couple of weeks. There CAN be some crap, but I think they get so much stuff in that they only sell the stuff that's sellable.

Great finds! I agree, you can find some good stuff in thrift shops, but there can also be some garbage.

Actually, I just recounted and got it all for £40... and one of the jackets came with a skirt but I didn't like the skirt so left it there :D . I'm very pleased with myself... it's so long since I've shopped cos money's not flying in at the moment... so it's nice to come home with 5 bags and not breaking the bank

I think you just have to get lucky... but, like I said, there are so many in this town... and everytime I've gone through any of them I've found something. Quite a lot of good quality stuff at the mo :o

just be careful you don't become one of those people who in their hunt/enjoyment of a great bargain...end up spending money on crap they really don't want or need. it happens. people get 'addicted' to the thrill of the hunt, and the 'great bargins' and such.

    cool for you tho!

i have to say, i haven't really done much shopping in thrift shops. we don't have that many around, although we DO have em.....bit outta the way. few times i have been in em, anyhting i liked....never the right size.

btw - what's the difference between a top and a shirt?
is a top a pullover and a shirt a buttondown?

nah, I've never really been one for unnecessary junk  can't stand it... and even more so since the move.

I get the impression they're not as 'used' over there??? Judging by the replies... people love charity shops over here :)

oh dear... well... we may need chime's interpretation skills for this one. A shirt has buttons, yes :) but then there are also blouses... a shirt's what you'd wear under a suit... but you can also have checked shirts... like the grungy ones... blouses are more fancy and might be shiny and/or with frills. A top is pretty much anything that doesn't have buttons... or isn't a jumper... a jumper is a sweater... and then you have tshirts and polo shirts... but neither of them are shirts.. they may be referred to as tops though  bet you're sorry you asked now?

I love thrift shops! When my daughter was a teen she wouldn't shop at thrift shops with me. Once I ran into 3 of her old teachers at one and she was embarassed, even though they were shopping there too. Now, she is 30 with 2 kids and loves thrift shops also. I find all kinds of deals, especially work clothes.

Helen, you've seriously been reading my mind lately! I was going to make a post exactly like this one!

My husband and I live in a town full of thrift stores and we became quite obsessed with the idea of finding the most interesting/unique crap there is to find... Especially putting a funny spin on things. Because of this we started a hilariously bad blog on it. Check it out!

    http://thriftstorenightmares.blogspot.com/

But seriously, thrift store finds are the best. You can make such great deals... Just last week I bought the cutest, never-been-used hair accessories that would normally be like 15 bucks a piece for only 50 cents! Yay!
  • One of my sisters shops at thrift stores at least once a week and usually finds a outfit or something useful for her home and family. Now my other sister never goes to a thrift shop. I don't think she has ever stepped inside of one either. Some people like them and some don't. lol

I look for items to put up on ebay and sometimes it works out really well. :)

I love a bargain, TK MAXX is the business :D

and also, $25 a year to join here, that's about 48c a week...I mean, if you enjoy Pearl jam, and you like being on the board, that's a tiny cost really.
Plus it brings other benefits...a real bargain I'd say :D

no interpreting needed, just as i said...so i get the differentiation now.

oh thrift stores are definitely used over here, especially depending where you live. i was simply saying in my particular area....we have a few...but a bit out of the way for me, that's all.....and the few times i've gone, no luck. it's like some of the off-price stores we have here - tj maxx, filene's basement, etc....people always tell me about their fabulous finds and deals, i go, and rarely find anything. i think people who love to shop, shop often, etc....have the most luck with it b/c obviously they se more. me, that isn't how i shop. i go out very occasionally, and with purpose, and sure..i don't much enjoy going clothes shopping endlessly. now stuff for my home and garden? i can shope all the time.

btw - as to old navy....i have work trousers i bought there years ago, and they still look fabulous and i wear them all the time. so not all old navy's stuff is disposable. in fact, i have quite a few items, jackets and such....excellent. tshirts and the like, sure, definitely don't last as long.
    Stay with me...

I HATE tk maxx for clothes... cos they're all lumped together... not according to style or sizes... I don't like rooting. In the charity shops all the clothes have the size on the hangers :D so ya just look for your colour hanger and see if you like it... simple. I love TK Maxx for household stuff though  I could spend a fortune in there.
