PB, salmonella question

since peanut butter is such a common food, how do they always know that the victims died from salmonella caused from the pb? Do they go to their homes and sample their food? Just wondering b/c so many ppl use sponges (at their sink) and they hold germs. I once read that a lady got salmonella but confessed that she took a dirty spoon from her sink, rinsed with cold water and stirred her coffee with it. Also, I see many ppl at work barely splashing their finger tips in the ladies room after using potty. This is why I wonder how they always know it is from peanut butter. This poor peanut farmer on the news from alabama said he is really going to suffer if he does not get some orders before May for peanuts. I felt so sorry for him.

last time, I think it was a peter pan scare and they said the jars were not washed properly. I have not read much about this scare. Are they saying the same thing?

The salmonella is linked to processed peanut butter used in peanut butter crackers, cookies, etc. I do not think most if any jars of peanut butter have been linked to this outbreak.

I can't find it now, but earlier today I read that a factory in GA is in alot of trouble, they found very dirty conditions, mildew, and roaches.

I wanted reese's peanut butter cups out of the vending machine yesterday, but I was not sure if they were safe.
