Now we're seeing one of the first moderately-sized exploits to take advantage of Mac users. The iServices.A Trojan horse is an attack being distributed via BitTorrent, where it's disguised as a bootleg copy of the new iWork 09. Once installed, the malware takes administrator access and connects to remote servers over the Internet, where it can be given additional instructions as the author commands, from installing additional malware to stealing information off the Mac in question. The malware creator can also take complete remote control of any compromised machine.

its been said for years that the reason macs were safer wasnt because of outstanding program but rather no one cared to make viruses. well it looks like macs have become popular enough to get some unwanted attention. looks like mac users might need to install anti-virus/spyware programs soon.....

i know there are a few mac users here, thought you'd find this useful.

What about ilife 09? I know it just came out today but who knows. I was thinking about downloading that torrent.

hmmm...maybe I'll have to skp on that just to be safe.

Meh....I've never used the virus argument, and I still think my Mac is better than my PC.

where are the 20,000 people who are "infected"? Its a trick to get the anti virus. if you wanted iwork all you have to do is download it from apple (free) and get the serial # thats it, problem solved!

& its not an os its an application

i know that. what i was saying is i highly doubt apple is behind this cause it makes no sense to scare people into buying iworks with malware buy making your os appear to have a chink in its armor. for years apple was able to brag about not being affected by virus and the like, so why ruin that so some people buy a simple program? if people start to think mac is just as unsafe as pc i bet alot less people will put down the money and switch from pc to mac.

It is inevitable that viruses will affect macs anyway, and it's just one, so I wouldn't let that stop you.
I'm not even a mac fan, either.

I haven't had AV on mine in 3 years. I grabbed Kaspersky suite 2009 on boxing week sales but haven't put it on yet. I will be turning it off when I don't need it running.

I first had norton..which worked fine and then started hogging my computer..i got rid of it and loaded AVG on it and it started screwing it up too. I tried uninstalling it and wound up crashing my computer. I lost everything :(. So now i have a version of mcafee that is for aol users..so far so good *crosses fingers*

there has always been a virus for the mac- the Word macro virus- which was for MS Word application. This new one...ehh. I haven't done enough research into it to see if it will totally affect me. I currently don't run the ilife suite of programs.

Macs and viruses- maybe more will come because its based on an intel platform now- but who knows- most virus programmers still hate PC's more.

If this makes you not get a mac, its one new virus for mac- and there is still a lot more for PC.

Norton is horrific for computer performance.
I haven't heard any complaints about AVG but Norton files are probably still around.
