  • our australian of the year mick dodson has called for australia day to be renamed invasion day on the basis that this is the date the country was taken from it's indigenous people ... the date should be changed to federation day instead.

???? most people think of it as a holiday - a sporting day ... not the day we 'stole' a country ...

but ... i can see the other side too

its a shame even national holidays need to be debated down to the last microspot

Today is just another day off. Since I don't work on Mondays, this is just a normal long weekend.

But I do like Mick Dodson's idea of celebrating a reconciliation day on Feb 13 instead of Jan 26. Jan 26 is but an outdated celebration of terra nullius, an idea we abandoned 20 years ago. Means nothing to me whatsover.

On the other hand, what happened last Feb on that day was truly wonderful, Kevin07 delivering a speech that matches up with everything I've heard from the new guy in the White House. Recognising that day will bring attention to the things that are yet to be achieved, just like Anzac Day draws attention to the themes of service and loyalty.

As it stands, Jan 26 just gives an excuse to people in the Shire showing their bad southern cross tattoos and bogans making people kiss their flag. We need a national day that means something. Since Jan 1 (Federation day) is already a public holiday, Feb 13 makes sense.

I'm also happy with November 24, my other greatest day. Oh, that was one fine day in 2007.

an empty apology if you ask me, what has he done in the year since to address the problems??

nothing??? a sorry won't make it all go away

at least in this time of financial crisis he has cancelled the next 3 over seas trips he had booked in. heaven forbid our pm spend more then a month in his own country without running off over seas for a holiday. what was it? 16 overseas trips in less then a year?

agree with you there. i'm kinda sick of seeing southern cross tatts and stickers on cars, people do understand that it's not really an australian thing right? it can be seen by everyone south of the equator.

So he signed a document (Kyoto) and said sorry, great year in office.

Im all for recognising the wrongs that were done in the past, but why the constant push for compensation?

Im open to debating changing the day, but definately not to Feb 13. Do I have an alternative? No. But we go from one extreme to another - from 'alienating' aborigines by staying at its current date, to making our National day a sorry day that focuses on negatives of this country. We should be celebrating whats great about this country.
Keep Feb 13 as a significant day for this country, but it shouldnt be our national day of celebration.

Personally the Cronulla comment is stereotypical crap. I think it's sad that you associate the Southern Cross and 'Aussie Pride' with Cronulla Bogans. A small minority of idiots shouldnt taint the overly vast population that show their pride for their country in the best possible light. But hey, thats just my opinion.

    Happy Australia Day everyone!!!

of course fucking not woman, stop being stupid.

i got me some $29 ones that came down to $17 or something.

they just had some $240 ones there, well it was a 2 pack so i guess they were only $120 each, but still, totally ridiculous.

Phew! I was thinking I might have to fly to Brisbane just to slap some sense into you! I wonder if there is THAT much of a difference between yours $30 ones and the $120 ones?

being in the USA today and reading about the Sydney race/hate riots makes me an embarrased Australian abroad. A day which should be a great day like the equivalent around the world but no it's tainted because of a few ignornant people mainly in NSW.

I'm not denying that the race riots are disappointing. However, problems surrounding race are evident all around the world. It is unfortunate, though when people with different cultures, different beliefs come into a society that don't necessarily live by those beliefs, conflict is bound to happen. And it happens all over the world, England, USA, France, etc.

Apparently he was in the early stages and he was backed for a fortune with betting agencies to win. Someone apparently leaked it.

Rumour has it that it such a leak hadnt occurred he very well may have won it
