She Dreams in Red

So, let's open this up again.
What do you remember as the meaning of this line was said to be?
This chick, who blogs on examiner.com blubbered something about the above mentioned line referring to "colorful dreams of passion" which is completely ridiculuous to me. I've never heard that before. As far as I remember, this was referring to a blood-shot eye after getting punched in the face.

I just always took it to mean vivid, which could include 'passion' in one sense, but not how it's listed/or comes off there. More like nightmares!
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."

Have you seen that chick's blog? She's under the false impression that transferring sentences from wikipedia into the space provided to you by a website means you're blogging.

  • I'm not a native speaker of English but I've come across "dreaming in red" many times...Isn't it a phrase?
I think that it means having envisions about someone. You have somehow "false" believes, everything seems better than it is...It could be in sleep but it could be a daydream also...

It's funny how my mind almost always finds an explanation for something... sometimes even words I've never heard before..It just works very intolerable - everything new is associated and linked with something already known..Maybe that's why people are generally afraid of everything that is different and everything they can't understand...and only here and then can come up with something completely new...Ok..Off I go ...sorry..
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

I always envisioned "in red" as being enraged--pissed off that she is stuck in her situation......
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream

  • I'm not sure what it means, but I have a friend who really hates those two lines... "Dreams in color, dreams in red? Isn't that redundant?"

I take it to mean sometimes she has vivid, optimistic, dreams and sometimes nightmares.

I think it means her life is drab and colorless, but her dreams are vivid and full of passion. Her dreams are more interesting than her day to day life. Maybe there's anger, maybe there's excitement, maybe there are visions of something better?

You can imagine all those things from that short phrase.

In Asia RED is a good and lucky color, not evil. That's why they use it for holidays.

i read somewhere once that those that dream in color are more ambitious & creative. so if she dreams in color, she has thoughts of a better life, but she can't find a betterman. that's how i've always interpreted that line.

  • I always thought of it as related to blood.

Dreams in color (which could be anything, even the best of dreams, but she...)
dreams in red (dreams of something bad, dreams of how she gets beaten)

I'd agree with those saying that she's dreaming of a better life, the life of colour, but I think the added 'in red' is suggesting unrest. She's not completely escaping her troubles here, but still feeling ... I'd say anger, stress, shame, violence (physically trapped herself).
  • i've never taken from it that she gets beaten, to me the line always meant that she dreams (in color) of better things, wants more out of life, but then she just decides to stay because she knows that even if she wants more, she can't find a betterman for her.
i know someday you'll have a beautiful life, i know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky...but why can't it be mine?

Really? I don't think it's about not being able to find a better man. I think it's about not having the courage to get out of that relationship. I just don't get that "red" being about anything positive.

  • Maybe my thoughts are too simple ... but for me the colour red always means "love". :) Her everyday life and her relationship are "grey" = sad, bleak, boring. But when she dreams she dreams in "red" = She remembers the good old times, when she was in love with this man. She wishes she could turn back time, but she can't.

i suppose it means that she dreams not in black and white as people do the most of the times...she dreams in color she dream in red which is a very intense color for we understand the strong fellings about the whole story..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

I thought the dreams in red was something bad too, but not of her getting beaten but that, since she is (possibly) in an abusive relationship that she was dreaming of doing the beating, thus causing her dream to be red (drawing blood). I picture her as being angry and getting revenge but can only do it in her dreams. The dreams in color makes me think of intensity and the dreams in red makes me think of violence, but that it will not occur, only in her dreams.

just from the song i always assumed it was dreams in color referred to dreams of something, someone better..
    and red as anger..
kinda simple but thats just how what i always assumed
  • I may be way off base here. When I hear it I think that she dreams in color means that, as many people have said, she is daydreaming vividly about the way she imagined her life going. But also, I think that when "she dreams in red," that it could be more than one meaning. I think it is saying that she is pissed off, and also maybe that she wants him dead or she wishes that she could kill him. The reason she doesn't kill him is because she can't find a betterman-- kind of the meaning of the whole song-- women get caught in these terrible relationships but they don't get out of them sometimes not only for fear but also because they feel like nobody else would ever want them, and that they are so down that they just don't think things could get any better.
Like I said, I may be way off base but I wish that she was thinking of hurting him. I don't want all wife beaters to be killed on the spot or anything, but I think they should all get the ass-kicking of all ass-kickings.

    My interpretation as well.

She dreams in color: Meaning she dreams of exciting and better things.

She dreams in red: Anger, she dreams of getting back at him, getting out of the relationship. I get this from the tone in which he sings that line as well.

Just how I've always viewed it. Either way... it's a pretty damn poetic and beautiful line.
All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...

And he who forgets, will be destined to remember...

I used to this it was "she dreams him, cause she dreams of me." Def a personal song and in the ear of the listener. Red as a color is supposedly passion. I view as emotional. The abuse is an interesting idea. I had never thought of it that way.
