Right well I feel like I want to start a wee section on the fantastic music that is coming ioutta my wee Island, North and South.

This is mainly because unless u live in Ireland and read Hotpress, State, Connected ot The Ticket (on Fridays) or listen to Tom Dunne, Alison Curtis, Dave Fanning on the radio then most here wont have a clue bout whats being produced, bar Snow Patrol, U2, Damien Rice etc!

I studyin in Liverpool and I aint a fan of the NME, due to their being a "best new band" every other week, but it as a magazine that sells back home gives fuck all coverage of out homegrown scene. (yes it tried bout 2 years ago to included an 8 page supplement but that was binned after only a couple of months)

So heres an initial list that some of you here should check out....either on myspace or whatever. If there's any other ones from areas of the country that I don't know (and yes theres ALOT) feel free to add to list!

Now I aint heard all of them on this list but go check em out anyway!

Giveamanakick (2 piece drums and guitar..fuckin load!)
Ten Past Seven
Dirty Epics
Fight Like Apes
Jetplane (Fugazi-ish)
Hooray For Humans
Super Extra Bonus Party
Fred
Mick Flannery
Rest
Therapy?
Sultans of Ping
Stanley 800
Kila (Trad)
Dudley Corporation
Pugwash
Paranoid Visions (Punk)
So Cow
Heathers (female duo)
Director
The Things
Mighty Stef
The Coronas
Dublin Duck Conspiracy
Kill City Defectors
Jape
The Redneck Manifesto (Irelands EITS!)

Added Sun 25th Jan
Butterfly Explosion (Instrumental rock)
The Kinetics
The Urges (60's garage rock/psychedelic)
Ham Sandwich

now there are many many more from all over NSE&W so if (m)any of u are interested then help out!

I thought Snow Patrol were from Scotland?

Least you can do is tell us which bands YOU like ... and what their sound is like.

    I know of a couple.

The Answer - Some of you might know these guys before, they're supporting AC/DC. Great band.

Jaded Sun - Amazing. One of the best debuts I've ever heard. They're my favourite "new" band.

as for which ones I like....most of em on the list...theres only a few I aint heard anything from.

and by me telling you which I like defeats the old purpose of you all going to search em out!!

TBH I wouldn't listen to any of those bands. They're the names I hear just before I change the radio channel from Phantom. I saw The Answer play a few years back. Never heard of them, but they were excellent at the time.

The Jimmy Cake - very extravangant 9man band epic rock music. one of best live shows ive ever seen

God Is An Astronaut - rock instrumental 3piece: a little bit Mogwai, lil bit RATM. AV live shows.

My Bloody Valentine - should be obvious

Cora Venus Lunny - virtuoso violinist, also happens to be gorgeous

Aphex Twin - electro. very cool & very weird electro, had popular videos for "Windowlicker" & "Come to daddy"

David Holmes - DJ/remixer/solo artist. did the soundtrack for Oceans 11

Chequerboard - One Acoustic Guitar, overdubs. Just released debut album, its quality.

Jinx Lennon - Co. Louth man, who shouts / talks his protest rants. a fixture at the Electric Picnic.

Melaton - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWhmp8OQxFk alas, they are no more.

The Guggenheim Grotto - melodic pop-rock, currently touring US: http://www.guggenheimgrotto.com/

The Brilliant Trees - http://www.myspace.com/brillianttrees another group no longer around. guitar based stuff. a real stand out for me.

Turn - 3 piece rock. quality frontman, but he's solo now

Si Schroeder - weird synth/solo music. very weird. also a regular at the EP

Cathy Davey - riff based pop from sultry voice singer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7TmpM6Yeew
"moving" was in a vodafone ad. http://www.myspace.com/cathydavey

Messiah J & The Expert - Rap group i guess. i like em a lot.

Oppenheimer - named after the lovely man who invented the atomic bomb. from Belfast, think Stereolab with guys.

Christy Moore - Living legend in Ireland. get Live At The Point. its sensational.

Halves - sigur ros/65daysofstatic - esque stuff from 19 year olds.

Roisin Murphy - former Moloko singer.

    Royseven - 6piece Dublin band: GREAT live show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaBWZs_N ... re=related

THE POGUES! It would be a travesty not to include these guys. If you're not familiar with them, imagine putting The Chieftains in a blender with The Sex Pistols to get some idea of what these guys sound like. Their frontman, Shane MacGowan, ain't much of a looker but the guy is an incredible songwriter and storyteller.

    Hovercraft Pirates.
I got their album, 'Mix Tape'.
They're kinda new I think, don't know too much apart from the album is pretty good.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....
  • Can I use this thread as a shameless plug for my friends and close acquaintances? Good. The following are all friends or close aquaintances of mine. I ain't a fan of them all musically, but most of them I am. The exception to this is Thin Lizzy. I obviously ain't friends with them!

Concerto for Constantine (featuring Binzer, who used to drum for the Frames), Gavin Fox (who used to play bass in Turn and Idlewild), and Mark Greaney (who used to sing in JJ72). Dirty 3 piece Smashing Pumpkins-y rock band.

Ollie Cole (ex-Turn) has a new album out shortly full of pop gems. (website: he has a myspace site under Oliver Cole, i think it is)

Juno Falls (the mighty Myles O'Reilly, who used to be in Blo.tooth, has a couple of excellent albums out, the first of which was produced by one of Crowded House's old colleagues). Folkie, but very eccentric and idiosyncratic folk music. Played the BEST version of Cornell's 'Seasons' at my wedding that you'll hear outside of Cornell himself singing it. Myles can play 12 string and has such a pure falsetto it's unreal. Also fond of fucking around with Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Joni Mitchell and some metal tunes when playing live. (Website: junofalls.net)

The Chapters, from Dublin, who have changed direction a few times, and are currently recording their debut LP. They started folkie, then went in a Band-like direction, and are currently more synth-based rock music. (Website: thechapters.ie)

The Frames. Mightiest live band ever. (Well, one of 'em for sure). 'nuff said. (Website: theframes.ie)

Damien Dempsey. Dublin folkie with BALLS. Listen to that accent! Could break Ireland in half with a punch. Has been known to keep up the drinking pace with Shane Magowan from the Pogues.

Skindive. broken up electro-metal band. 1 album.

Mundy (whose fourth LP is being released this year. For a taste of a very young Mundy, get Baz Luhrmann's [spelling?] |"Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack. Mundy has 'To You I Bestow' on it.) My favourite Mundy album is Raining Down Arrows. Recording in Nashville. Serious pedal steel action. Mundy reminds me of a mixture of Neil Young and Springsteen in a 30 something year old's body. One of the good guys. (Website: mundy.ie)

Mark Geary. Another Dublin folkie who moved to New York when he was 18. Glen from the Frames and Mark used to play in Sin-e and hang out with Jeff Buckley frequently. Mark has unique phrasing and will make you wet yourself laughing with his between song onstage banter. Haven't seen Mark in a few years, but will probably blag into Whelan's for his gig next month. (Website: markgeary.com)

Gemma Hayes. Electric folkie. Second album out now. Adam Duritz from Counting Crows fucking loves her. From Tipperary. Look up her site for photos. Sigh. (Website: gemmahayes.com)

BellX1. Ricer used to sing for 'em when they were Juniper. Then Ricer left, Paul Noonan the drummer stepped up to sing, and BellX1 were born. Had a couple of songs on that show the OC. One was played during a scene with a lesbian kiss. I've never seen the show, but the press made a big deal out of that scene. BellX1's new LP is out this month. Some of the most clever lyrics you'll ever hear. (Website: bellx1.com)

Declan O'Rourke. More trad-sounding folkie. Very cool and cross generational. (Website: declanorourke.com)

Duke Special. Northern Irish piano player. Very very eccentric music. All over the place. Very cool live. Anything can happen at his gigs. Eye liner and dreadlocks. (website: dukespecial.com)

Giveamanakick. Dirty 2 piece rock band from Limerick. Helmet-ish. Kick arse live.

Paul O'Reilly. Very quiet folk music. One album out. Currently residing in Galway and going to as many Mastadon shows as he can.

    Pugwash. Pop-gems.Beach Boys-ish.

The Stunning. A band huge in Ireland in the '90's. Find 'Brewing Up A Storm' somewhere. Cracking tune. They reform every second Christmas for a tour, and they're kick arse.

The Walls. Steve and Joe are brothers. They formed the Stunning back in the day. After breaking up the Stunning, they formed the Walls. Guess what their last name is? (website: thewalls.ie)

TURN. Best Irish rock band ever. 3 piece Arse-kicking rock behemoths. Miss them dearly. I used to travel with them. Sell merch, bootleg the shows, take photos. Ollie Cole is one of the most charismatic frontmen ever.

Thin Lizzy. If you don't know them, you ain't a rock fan.

Lisa Hannigan. Check out her new album 'See Sew'. Touring America soon, i think. Used to sing with Ricer.

Paddy Casey. Managed by U2's manager, Paul McGuinness. 3 albums, all singer-songwritery, but all different from each other.

I'm on night duty and have to go do some work. This is totally stream of consciousness. Hope it helps someone who fancies some new tunes! There's someone else who's a friend of mine that's missing from this list, but I can't remember who it is. Haven't the time at the moment to get links to everybody's websites, I just did the ones I could remember in a heart beat. Most of these acts are older acts (late 20's to late 30's would be the muso's average ages), but that's also my age, and we all hung out in our little music community in Dublin. The post at the top of this has newer, younger Irish bands, who I ain't so familiar with. Right, gotta run.
    My Pearl Jam shows: 1 in 1995, 2 in 1998, 20 in 2003, 13 in 2006, 3 in 2007, 8 in 2008, 5 in 2009, 4 in 2010, 5 in 2012. EV: 8 in 2011, 1 in 2012. Brad: 1 in 1998, 1 in 2002.
