So i know there was a thread about this show on the old pit, but for some reason I can not find it here :?

I tried the search feature and could not find it and i went back through about 15 pages and did not see it.

So I figured i'd start a new one. As i mentioned in the last thread i got the first season for christmas. I'm only through the first ten episodes but I think i'm hooked! It took me a while but i think i'm finally really getting into it.

I'm going out this weekend to buy the entire series all five season box set at best buy

I just wanted to have a thread others could show their appreciation or get into this show becuase it seems like it is going to be great watching all of them!

That box was onsale over the holidays and I wish I'd bought it! I have each individual season but the box looked so cool ;)

It really is an amazing show. I had the same experience. A few episodes in, I was confused by the multitude of characters and liked it but wasn't blown away. Didn't get the hype. Somewhere in the second half of season one, I realized I was hooked. Season 3 and 4 were really impressive. 5 was good, but it's impossible to top the heights it had gone prior to that.

Still, hands down it's the best tv I've ever seen. There is no better portrait of the struggles of inner city American life out there.
  • I miss this show already. The Wire and The Shield end in the same year....what a shitty year.

I was just talking with two guys at school who were in the midst of watching the Wire too! The only bad thing about watching the Wire is that everything else on TV begins to sorta suck. Once you watch 60 hours of the best TV ever created, it's hard to really get into anything else again.

I recommend reading David Simon's book "Homicide" and Richard Price's books "Lush Life" & "Clockers" all great books. Simon is the genius behind the Wire and Price wrote a couple episodes.

For some reason after i finished season one i took a long time before i started season 2, but I've watched the first 7 episodes of season two over the past three days. I think it's really good. I'm really seeing the social commentary more clearly.

I could not agree more though about other TV shows just not seeming very good in comparison. I never watched much TV before because it was nothing like the wire and i try to watch other shows hoping they might be cool like this and as you put it they just pale in comparison.

My husband and I just started watching this. We're through maybe the first 6 or 7 episodes. I was hooked after about 2. I love it!

I have heard nothing but amazing reviews, yet I hate cop shows.

Is there anything you can compare this to? TV shows or movies, so I'll get a vibe if I'll like it?

    Thanks!

Not sure what I would compare it to. I don't watch cop shows, But there is a focus on way more than just the cops, each season takes different looks at everything. The Police, the dealers, the workers, the kids, the media. All the characters are explored and how they live and interact. So you get to know all of them, and they kind of are invovled in each season.

    Well put.

I don't watch cop shows either, but this one seems to be more about an exploration of society and it's similarities between people and how we interact and handle themselves.

You may be a cop or a drug dealer, but in those lifestyles there are accepted codes and their are good cops, bad cops just like there are drug dealers that you can sympathize with more and bad ones that you have harder time sympathizing with.

I usually watch tv shows and their is over the top action for a dramatic effect or happy endings, but the wire seems to be the closest thing to "a reality show" i have seen.

I finished it last night. Watched the end of Season 5.

What a fucking outstanding TV series. I have never seen anything on TV that i enjoyed more.

A piece of art and social commentary.
