Do the Evolution is to Pearl Jam what Kashmir is to Led Zeppelin... the song that defines the band.

Agree?

Not sure if I agree, but it's one of my top 5 PJ songs. It encapsulates Eddie's smart, snarky lyrics and vocals, the band's aggressive rhythm and power, and it's concise.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

To the "fans" yea maybe. Most fans consider yield their best album, and its a heavy fast song with great vocals. I could agree with that. But it IS missing a Mike solo.

Mmm... i think given to fly is more a signature than do the evolution, given to fly it's awesome, not my favorite tune but great none the least!

Don't want to be a thread killer, but ... no one song defines either of these bands ... not even close.

Totally agree with you...no one song ever defines any one band, unless they are a "one hit wonder" band. But I will say, it is by far their best video...and IMO, the best and most important music video ever made.

Yes, I think the video sums up everything the band stands for and believes in.

agreed. when i was hitting shows in 05 i would ask people what song they wanted to hear tonight and unanimous winner was always given to fly.....people love that song, it just takes off. lifts you up.

as for defining pearl jam wouldnt it be alive, evenflow or jeremy to most casual listeners?

Personally, I don't think anyone on here can say what "most fans" consider to be the best PJ album! I am a huge fan....and I think mostly everyone on here would consider themselves that as well. I feel like any superfan would be insulted to be grouped in any stereotyped thought of what album should be considered their best. I guess it all comes down to personal opinion.

I do agree that PJ can NOT be defined by any one of their songs. I feel like they have such a range of different melodies and sounds, plus they can rock out with the legends! They are legends! That's what I love about the band....their range and ability to put me in different moods with music... I have so many favorites...not any one of them belong to any one specific album...... :D

I agree that Do Th Evolution might be my favorite song but I dont know if it "defines" the band...However I will say this song "defines" Pearl Jam as a live band... The way they play this song and the crowds reaction is certainly a special thing to witness.

That was what I thought at first, but Alive only defines the first few years of them being a band. And even to a casual listener - there's so much more than that.

I agree that DTE is very much a signature song.

I know it's a generalization, but you'll notice when those silly polls run through here, "what's your favorite album?", often times Yield is right up there at the top. I think they just stated that generalization to make a point, not lump a superfan into a stereotype.

I think the original poster just had a personal revelation in their comparison. I kinda get it, I think. Both are very anthemic songs. Interesting thought process if you ask me.

Nah, you know what it was. I was listening to Zeppelin's Mothership record and inside the booklet, someone asked Jimmy Page if he thought Stairway to Heaven was their defining song and he said no way. Kashmir would be. It got me thinking that every PJ show I have ever heard since 98 has DTE played. Sure, there have been a couple where it hasn't been, but it's almost a staple in their live shows. PJ has such a broad musical range that I agree, it's hard to say that there is a defining song. Just wanted others thoughts. Thanks.

I wasn't trying to stereotype anyone. I was just saying that most fans seem to like Yield the best. Johnny Pistachio got what I meant. If you look at polls, yield is usually number one.

Plus why would I want to stereotype PJ fans when I am one

Well I've been listening to Zep alot longer than PJ and IMO Kashmir merely defines the band for those who don't regularly listen to them.

For PJ this song would have to be Alive or Evenflow.
