Singer Songwriters

Maybe my favorite genre of music or style or whatnot.

I just like sparse, naked, and honest music. Music that doesnt really glisten, but is raw.

Bands like Ray lamontagne, Damien Rice, Fionn Regan, Iron and Wine, Bright Eyes, Sufjan Stevens etc...

I find the music to be unnerving, stunning, and stripped off pretense.

its honest music.

I've been on a big Bob Dylan and Neil Young kick lately, and I dig Bright eyes and Conor Oberst. Pete Yorn too. But a lot of them end up sounding too samey at some point. Even Dylan... he has whole albums are almost indistinguishable. But then, I've always been more of a music guy than a lyrics guy.

it's probably been said before, but i think bon iver "for emma, forever ago" is pretty stripped down. it's been my latest obsession at least.

I'm pretty fussy about my singer-songwriters. The less twee/James Taylor-like, the better. Here are my favourites:

    John Martyn:

Singer Songwriters are very cool. I was listening to the latest Kathleen Edwards album the other day but i could not help but think she would sound better if she ditched the band and did solo acoustic versions of pretty much every song on the cd. It sounds too polished with the band.

Lots of other great ones mentioned in this thread including bon iver which i've been gettin into a bit lately.

My favs though are probalby ryan adams and neil young.

I've been loving Ryan Adams ever since I began listening to his stuff...it's a different style for me, but I really like it. He's a great musician...it's a shame he's throwing in the towel musically for a while...

while he has a (deserved) dodgy reputation on here thanks to his Dublin opening set in 06, Paddy Casey's 1999 debut album actually is really good. its called "Amen: So Be It". (he has other albums - theyre not good at all).

    these songs in particular.
    Everybody Wants
Sweet Suburban Sky ***** (this one in particular is gorgeous)
    It's Over Now

    Fink
Joan Armatrading (dont know if she fits into this category but fuckit)
    Mark Geary
    Vyvienne Long

Kathleen Edwards and Feist are my favourites lately! Grab the album 'Failer' by Kathleen Edwards, some of the best songwriting in years.

I'll third Kathleen Edwards, and add a few other women into the mix:

Lucinda Wiliams - Essence is probably her best album, but Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is right up there too. Very consistent, honest songwriting.

Amanda Palmer - I haven't listened to her other project (Dresden Dolls), but Who Killed Amanda Palmer is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Check out Ben Taylor. Great acoustic stuff.
