**Official stop the bastardization of national songs thread*

This thread is a petition to stop the overworking, oversinging and general bastardization of national songs (my only experience is with American anthems and the like, but I am sure it happens in other countries as well). This is not a new phenomenon, it has been occurring for decades and must stop.

Nope... I think it's just an American thing... but I'm pretty sure Leona Lewis will change that and single handedly spread this phenomenon throughout the world :D

my national anthem is usually only ever sung by drunk people... its quite good fun actually.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

But I make money every year betting on how long the National Anthem will be at the Super Bowl when some artist butchers it.

Think about my gambling habits before making a thread like this. ;)

Everything is oversung nowadays... watch American Idol and what people consider "good." It's about histrionics and melodrama.

The Mets are among the biggest offenders with this. The Yankees seem to do it right, either with a recording of the Marine Corps band or of Robert Merrill.

I have nothing against this practice... however, if you are asked to perform at a major sporting event, please do not turn the star spangled banned (or other national song) into a 10 minute ooohhh and ahhh and oversung atrocity.

we are in agreement my friend. i am staunch advocate for singing those songs the exact way they were meant to be sung. that is why i led a thunderous applause in the jeagler's basement on sunday for that american idol chick at the eagles game. i thought she did a commendable job and didnt really alter anything.....but i was also out of my mind drunk at that time.....hey, did we win?

I believe Mike plays the song the was it was intended to be played -- originally they just didn't have the technology to play it correctly.

    My favourite :D

But yeah, it's a very American thing to do the whole oversinging anthems until you can't make out a single word and they last longer than the game of football. So I'm with the o.p. on this one.

Well as long as you all know that it was Hitler and his Propaganda Division that popularized the use of national anthems and "patriotic" songs, and that you are taking part in something he used to get people to blindly follow him while he did terrible things, then National Anthem away.

that seems to be what those songs were designed for.

It's just that I don't think Hitler was as instrumental in popularizing patriotic/anthem like songs. That type of thing was around long before him. Our own anthem was adopted by congress in 1931.

Yeah our anthem was played several times before the '36 Olympics, especially at big contests like Opening Day in Baseball, and the World Series. However, we weren't playing it at every little event in the way that we do today until Hitler played it after every event during the Olympics, playing the German anthem twice in a row when his country won, in an attempt to promote Aryan supremacy. Thus it is clear that the popularization of the Anthem is a direct decendent of Hitler's propaganda machine, just as it is part of any countries propaganda machine to demonstrate the supremacy of that country.

The Aussie anthem gets overdone quite regularly. But that's ok cos it's not a particularly good anthem to begin with.
