This question feels very rhetorical... but I am serious... I have to go to the North Sea and I am hitting Amsterdam for the weekend... Now... I don't smoke dope, nor would I ever be with a prostitute (though window shopping isn't out of the question... just to say I did it).. That said... anything I should see or do with my 2 nights there? Haven't had a chance to look it up online... plus personal experiences are better.. i think i am staying by the airport.. I'm clueless... any advise is good.

The canal tour is BRILLIANT... but it may be quite cold now... especially if you're into taking pics... my hands were frozen by the end

I'm not into dope or prostitutes either... but the sex thing there is just soooo bloody and strangely normal that you can't help getting dragged into it somehow. I DID go to a sex show... and it felt just like going to a panto at home or something.

Do you drink? There is an AMAZING selection of Belgian and German beers throughout Amsterdam... try LaChouffe (my favourite) but be warned... it's stronger than it tastes... much :o
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

I was there last spring . . . absolutely beautiful. You should really go to the Rijksmuseum and/or the Van Gogh Museum. There's also the Torture Museum, The Sex Museum, the Marijuana and Hemp museum (in the Red Light District). I spent a lot of time just walking around and exploring. You could also do a covered canal tour. Here is a link to the thread I started last year. There are some great suggestions to be found

Yeah the Rijks musuem and Van Gogh are must if you are into art. Check out the red light district just to say you did it. The Ann Frank House is there.... it is a bit of a downer for obvious reasons.

I had a great time at the Heinken Factory. They give you a tour then sit you down and let you taste their tastey beverage!

Er, um, er ... What to do in Amsterdam for a weekend at this time of year, if you're not there for the wummins in the windows, or the spacecake cafes ... Er, um ... Yes, there's the Van Gogh museum, there's Rembrandt's house, there's the canal tour, a few trams and a few places where you can eat a lot. That's about it, really.

One good thing about Amsterdam is that even if it's about -5 c, it doesn't feel too cold.

I would like to see one of the sex shows tbh... just because of what Helen's said about it being a panto... i love pantos... i cant think of anything better than shouting out to a woman on stage as she's getting pummeled doggy style ... "he's behind you"
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I know a woman who saw one. She was never the same again. :D

i'd heard they were quite tame in comparison to the mexican ones though... not tame like a domestic cat... more tame like a donkey...

I'll need to go sometime... the wife fancies going... and thats after she knows about all the sex shows.

  • There's also the Anne Frank house.

The sex show was on the verge of boring to be honest.. there were even two guys in front of us who were texting and talking throughout.. then they turned around and started chatting US up and turns out they were Irish too :D so we were actually kinda slagging the whole thing.. it was one of the weirdest conversations I've ever had.

But you do get dragged into the 'when in rome' mentality. I'd no intention of doing a sex show.

To be honest I was kinda glad to leave Amsterdam, it freaked me out a bit

  • I was there a little over a year ago and there is alot to do in amsterdam besides just smoking weed (did my fair share of that to though lol). You have to see the Van Gogh Museum, amazing... There is really so much to do there... like others have said go check out the red light district just to see what it's all about. When you are at the Van Gogh Museum, just outside, there is the Huge I AMSTERDAM sign, you can get some great pictures there. On the way back to the red light district there's a big standup chess board where you can watch people play, great for some people watching.
I'd go into the mall behind Dam Square, i got some really good deals in there and some clothing that you don't see around here.

Dam Square is really good itself, not sure if there would have anything right now... but when i was there, they had a huge sand soccer tournement, serving cheap heineken with stands and everyting, that was really cool.

Try out all the different beers there to, like somebody else said, the belgium beers there are amazing, and yes, they are much stronger than most of us are used to.

Like i said, so much there to do, just walk around and you'll find different things to do. One day we just started walking and ran into an outdoor concert and spent about 3 hours there just drinking and meeting new people.
