Why does this band get so much hate? Hear it all the time online, quite a few people i know (even pj fans) despise them, and I've seen 'em bashed on the old forums quite a few times. One of my favorite bands though, does some great blues-punk and garage rock, they put on an awesome live show, even mccready like 'em! So whats with the hate?

I like 'em, but they're kinda one trick ponies tbh. Jack White is an incredible guitarist, but the White Stripes for me just get boring quickly.

It's not so much hate as a response to the hype. They're a decent enough band and sure Jack White's a good guitarist. But to hear the way the critics talk about them, he's the next Beatles. Come on... his songs aren't THAT great. They're a good bluesy garage rock band, but no more, no less. Nothing he's doing is particularly new or compelling. So why does he get his ass kissed more than anyone outside Radiohead? That's why I might come off as "hating" the band... because they're barely above average and it's annoying to hear everyone tripping over themselves to pop wood every time Jack White's name is mentioned.
  • Could it be the drummer? :P

I love this band but over the past couple years have preferred Jack White's other band.. Obviously just with meg white it can't go too mnay other places but Brendan Benson etc. are a way better fir for him.

I was just revisiting their DVD over the weekend, and i ususally NEVER would make this kind of comparison, but at times Jack White really reminded me of Robert Plant singing.

One trick pony? Sure they keep it pretty basic, but that's not accurate. Admittedly most of their music comes from the same place, but they have plenty of songs that aren't necessarily the WS sound. GBMS in particular.

Thought the new Raconteurs albums was boring compared to the last 2 WS albums. Broken Boy Soldiers was pretty solid though. I always thought if White got a solid band behind him, they would destroy the White Stripes. IMO, that's not the case.
  • No hate here. I think they're amazing.

What he said! There are way too many good bands out for these guys to get so much attention.

Wasn't there supposed to be a new album? I have mixed feeling about the last album. I wasn't really feeling it. But Elephant is a classic to me. :)
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
  • Here's the deal with the White Stripes. If you want deep, Dylanesque or Vedderesque lyrics then you're going to be really disappointed. If you want primordial, kick ass riffs and that relentless bass drumming then they're pretty damn solid. I mean seriously Jack White is a one man riff machine. Dude is incredible and might be the best slide guitar player I've seen in a really long time. It's kind of a lost art form and he does it proud. Some fans get caught up with the perception that their ealy stuff was better, personally I thought Icky Thump was one of the best albums to come out that year.

The vibe I've gotten from my friends is that they don't like Meg. They all enjoy Jack, but the drumming isn't anything special or overly difficult.

As I've said before, it may be a cliche, but that doesn’t make it untrue: to fully appreciate the White Stripes, you’ve gotta see them live. On a bad night, Jack White’s a six-string demon waist-deep in delta blues- but when he catches fire onstage, there’s no stopping the guy as he tears off solo after squealing, stuttering, frantic solo, throwing verses from other songs into the mix and generally acting like a man possessed. Their Coachella set in 2003 changed my life, due in no small part to the fact that Jack was furious that he couldn’t hear himself in the monitors, and channeled his frustrations into a jaw-droppingly blistering performance that easily ranks among the top live shows I’ve ever seen.

That first live performance of Death Letter was truly a spiritual moment - it was like what going to church should feel like.

I don't like them solely because of the drumming. Not only is she a terrible drummer, (or atleast she plays terribly with him) but the drum sound is awful. I don't feel like hearing her pounding on the crash as if thats her only cymbal.

Oh....and there's no bassist. that could mean something.

What the hell could it mean? I'll tell you: Jack doesn't write a setlist before he goes onstage. He plays with his gut, from his heart, and throws segments of other songs into what he's playing. It would be absolutely impossible for a bassist to keep up. What he needs is someone to keep a beat - it's as simple as that. He wasn't looking for dynamics and prowess. The White Stripes is about 93% Jack - Meg is a novelty, just someone on board to make sure that Jack doesn't fall out of time while he's thrashing around like a live-wire blues demon.

That's what makes the Raconteurs so refreshing - Jack has the full band treatment, and takes on an entirely different musical identity within a group than he does in the Stripes.

I've got a feeling 2009's going to be a big one for Jack.

2nd one "doesn't work in my country" but the first is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.
    Fuck yeah.
  • i use to dump on them alot until I saw them live. Then it all changed, it was a great show!

although I think the Black Keys are a better blues band

I think Megs drumming is always under scrutiny, but I really like her playing and how it compliments the open-ness of the music. I didnt know they didnt do setlists, so it's even more impressive.
