Hi, my girlfriend is a teacher in the south Bronx in NYC and due to budget cuts and the lack of funding, she set up a Donors Choose account to help get materials for the school. If you would like to help, please click the link below to learn more and donate. Thanks!!

Inspiration Through Social Studies Read Alouds!

There is nothing quite like a good read aloud to bring a student's imagination alive!

I am a Social Studies cluster teacher in a high-need elementary school in the South Bronx, NY. In the younger grades, when students cannot yet read complicated texts themselves, there is no better way to hook a student into a topic than through a read aloud. Read alouds can be informational as well as motivational and can help students learn not only content but reading, writing and discussion skills.

Here's the problem-- most of the Social Studies books available to accompany the units I teach are dated, worn, or, worse yet, boring!

My first, second and third graders need a variety of interesting, memorable, informative and colorful read aloud books to supplement their learning. The books I have selected cover a wide range of topics, including world cultures, communities, families, folk tales and much much more!

Please help my students become lifelong learners by donating to this project! If a picture is worth a thousand words, then imagine the value a beautifully illustrated book can have to an elementary school student!

My students need 30 colorful and engaging Social Studies read aloud books. The cost of this proposal is $455, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment.
