Sorting family pictures

I've been on a clear-it-out, take-it-to-GoodWill, organize for moving kick for the last few weeks.

Last night I started organizing, throwing away, etc., family pictures. Mostly, it's sorting. I'm only throwing away things like pictures of relatives' homes, relatives' dogs, people no one remembers (!), what might be deamed "the trash photos." :D

Anyway, when I went to bed last night I had dreams about the collection and I realized that you can learn alot by looking at ten years worth of family pictures all at once like that. You get a real sense of the transitions that everyone went through as they were growing. (Aside from the obvious changes in size that the kids go through...)

I think it's worth doing this now and then! :ugeek: <--Mr.geek's advice

  • I'd love to... but my mother, who nobody speaks to, has them all under lock and key so we don't get to see them  . But yep, I do love looking back over mine and other peoples old pics... not tooooo often, but after a few years you get a good laugh from them.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you

I'm totally with you! :geek: Especially when there are some great photos of friends and family who have passed away, it's so nice to be reminded of past times.

I've organized all my printed photos into albums, and have just finished sorting my digital photos.. so now I'm on to the next meganormous project of digitizing/scanning my printed photos so we'll always have backups.

Photos aren't necessary in remembering past occasions, friends and family - but they are so nice to have and I cherish mine :)

I steal photos from my my mom's albums occasionally. She'd probably kill me if she knew. My favorite is a picture of my sisters (twins), probably 3 or 4, sleeping in my grandmother's arms (she's now deceased). I keep it, along with a few others, with me in my journal.

My mother also keeps boxes for each of the children. Stuff from out entire lives, at least until college. Pictures, school crafts, etc. But the things I found most revealing were our report cards. A friend of mine said that if you wanna know what you're really like, read the teacher comments on your report cards. The were so on, it was uncanny. Who knew I'd turn out to be a hyper-responsible, cranky, opinionated loner? Apparently, my K-2 teachers. If you have access, give 'em a read.

I am wondering about doing it the other way around...I'm thinking about making sure I make hard copies of all the digital pictures I have kept on my computer!! ;)

I love the fact that with the digital pictures, I can edit the ones that don't turn out well to begin. So, the collection as a whole is nicer than the older one full of so-so pics that were on film.

Heehee I had that same thought too! But my printed photos far outnumber my digital ones, so I figured I'd go backwards, then forwards with the edited ones, like you said (buh-bye red eye, wrinkles and thumbs in the frame!) How long do you think it'll take you to do it all?

Well, I'm not sure. It took me a week to print out 365 tree pictures and several days to print out my vacation pictures.

I think the best plan will be to start from where I am now and edit and print as I go from here on out!

I'm impressed that you'd have the patience to scan in hundreds of old pictures and edit the bad ones! :geek:

Are you a nature photographer or just love trees?

And don't be too impressed yet! I'm getting ready to start crankin them all out and I have a feeling that I'm going to get pretty particular as I go along. What editing software are you using?

Well, I do love trees, but it was actually a project I started and I wanted to get entirely around the weather cycle... I took a picture of the most interesting tree I saw each day. :geek:

So, now I have a year's worth of pictures that show not only the weather, but the variety of beautiful trees near where I live. I was surprised at how different the same places looked through-out the year. It gave me a real sense that just by paying attention, a person would notice more colors and beauty than by going on without looking.

I just use iphoto now. I don't do anything complicated to the pictures. I learned how to use Adobe photoshop years ago, but I'm sure there have been many versions of it since then and I don't use it now.
