I have always wanted to buy a record player, and I am currently strongly considering it. I don't know much about them however. i was wondering if you guys could perhaps give me some things to look for in buying one, and how much should I expect to pay, etc.? Also, how readily available are most albums (PJ especially)?

Cheers

I guess we need to start in determining how much you are willing to spend. GOOD turntables for audiophiles (audio snobs) are gonna start at 400 minimum.

There are entry levels that will sound fine for around 100

your needle makes a world of difference

Your cables make a worlds difference

if it has a phono pre-amp or your receiver does, if not you have to buy one

give the tech nerds some help on what you want

As far as availibilty is concerned, vinyl is coming back in popularity and they're starting to creep up in more and more places, and more new releases are being released on vinyl alongside the CD compared to a few years ago. Most indie record shops carry them, some of the bigger big-box type record stores are starting to have them to. There are plenty of online merchants that specialize or offer vinyl, Amazon.com actually has quite a bit.

Regarding PJ, depending on where you live, you should be able to track down a copy of Ten without difficulty. Vs. and Vitalogy are a bit harder to find but can be had relatively inexpensively. No Code onwards have been out of print for a long time, so your only real alternative is the secondary market at inflated going rate prices, or offering a fan a trade.

Of the regular studio albums, Binaural tends to be the most expensive.

And so you see, I have come to doubt

All that you said is true. Also of note is that it seems PJ is re-releasing all of their albums (I'm assuming on CD AND Vinyl) so a second issue should be had for much less than an original copy.
