A Blender article on The Hold Steady, includes this line:

Maybe I love both these bands (Hold Steady and LCD Soundsystem), because they openly mock the idea that music is not the most important thing in life".

What exactly does that statement mean? How does it manifest itself in these bands music?

Do they mock it by making their music dull? That's how I feel about The Hold Steady anyway. I only have one LCD album, but haven't spent much time with it to comment.

Either Blender missed the point or I did. Both of these bands seem to mock the pretentious indie twats that think music is everything and that their sure route to a meaningfully cool existence is to have an edge over everyone else by only liking music nobody else has heard of or being there "first." They mock the shallowness and pretentiousness of those whole scenes.

Though on the flip side, they do both somewhat embrace the pure joy of good music and the fact that it means so much to so many. So maybe it does in a sense mock the idea that music isn't everything, but in a populist kind of way... in the sense that indie douchebags don't have a lock on really loving music.
