hey all! so i'm planning on getting into vinyl this year and have been researching turntables. i need help! my priorty is to get PJ vinyls, and all i'm looking for is the absolute best sound quality. i truly have no idea what i'm looking at and don't want to rely on random internet reviews, so i come here with other fanatics who cherish their PJ vinyl and want the best sound quality.

so, any recommendations? what do you use for your records? what features/specs should i be looking for? so far the best reviewed turntable has been the technics 1200.

thanks!!!

ps- sorry if this is in the wrong forum

    Look at the following brands:
    - Pro-ject
    - Riga
Both do great turntables, with great design.

I have this one and it's great:

I got a Denon DP300F for Christmas that I'm very happy with.

It's probably the best bang for your buck on the market as far as turntables go. It's a great price for a great deck. It's got an automatic tone arm which is a bonus if you just want to hit "start" and spin the black.

It comes with it's own built in pre-amp and equalizer which is a great bonus because you can hook it up to any system even one w/out a Phono input!!!

If your just looking to sit back and dust off some chirstmas singles and old vinyl, you'll be more than happy with the Denon DP300F. It's a great sounding table and you'll be more than pleased with the warm sound.

Audiophiles will likely bitch about the mid-range cartridge/stylus that comes with the table...But if you really want to get your feet wet...it's very easy to replace the existing cartridge/stylus with something a little more high end...

I was going to say the same thing.

I picked up a 2nd-hand Project 1.2 from eBay for £77.40 delivered last year.
You can pick a brand new Debut III for around £150.

Pricewise, the sky's the limit, but unless you have top notch Amplification and Speakers (and earing far more sensitive than mine) there's no much point in spending 1000s on the turntable.
a more expensive stylus can be a better use of your money too.

Also remember that if you Amp doesn't have Phono input you'll need a pre-amp, either included in the table or separate.
  • Hi

I have a Rega Planar 3, it's not first time I've owned one, in the early 90's I bought one new £350 and it was my pride and joy for a number of years but the stylus got broken and my house mate turned me on to DJ decks and it kind of gathered dust, a friend of mine asked if I'd sell it and in moment of weakness he had it off me for £110.

After that point I had some cheap Numark decks with basic stylus's a few years back I decided to get me another Rega, I managed to win a bid on Ebay and got it for a snip at £170.

I believe this paticular deck was about 30 years or so old, they really are sturdy looking things, thick block base on sturdy rubber legs with a heavy glass platter. i guess the only downside although I'm used to it is that you have to remove the platter and adjust the band to go from 33 to 45.

They look basic but Rega believes in putting the money into the arm and design not electric direct drive motors and gadgets that knock the stylus up and push the arm across, no you have to take the stylus off your self.

Having this turntable mean interacting with your equipment but if your listening to vinyl I believe it must be more than stick it on and doing dinner or ironing etc, you want stick it on and forget about it stick with your CD & Ipod malarkey. All this digital technology has taken the investing in your music out of listening to albums, shuffle and compiling playlists is fine but if I want to listen to Vs, Yield, Wish You Were Here or Miles Davis Bitches Brew, I want to hear them the way they were intended not some uber compilation and if you still enjoy just sitting down embracing the artwork reading the sleevenotes and surrendering whole to the music then there is no better place than the Turntable.

I highly recommend Technics. Heres mine:

SL-1210MK2 model. Look on ebay. Got this for lil over $100 and retails new for $500. All I had to do was buy a new stylus cartridge.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

You can't go wrong with anything made by Technics. I own the Technics 1800 and it has such a warm sound! I used to have a Technics SL-Q33 and I had it for 15 years. It still works, but I upgraded to the 1800.

    The SL-Q33 cost me $100
    The 1800 cost me $180

Also, get a nice pair of speakers.

You could get the nicest turntable on the market, but it wont mean crap if your listening thru a pair of $100 speakers.

I have a Rega P2 ($350US) and it is great for my needs.

Great audio file sound probably starts at $2,000 - $2,500. Visit Needledoctor.com:

Also, the phono cartridge is important too:
