great record. very 'wintry' record to listen to. sounds like me and grandma's musical tastes got together in a blender.

I really don't care for the Fleet Foxes' record at all. Tried to get into it, gave it more than one listen, just find it very bland and meh.

I get what they're trying to do, I really do.

The Black Keys' "Attack & Release" and Portishead's "Third" were top notch last year and better than everything else IMO.

Check out My Morning Jacket's "Librarian" off of last year's album "Evil Urges". The best Fleet Foxes song that Fleet Foxes never wrote. It succeeds in accomplishing exactly what Fleet Foxes failed to do with their self-titled album.
  • I haven't heard their entire album, but I really like what I have heard. I am not sure why I am procrastinating and not going out and getting it, but it is definitely on my to do list.

I really like the song "Mykonos" that is on their Sun Giant EP and not their full length self titled album. It is an awesome song, very CSN&Y. Cool band though and I hope I get a chance to see them live at some point in the near future.
  • with all the great press I grabbed it with some gift card $$ right after Christmas..I really like it.

I don't get this statement at all. What exactly does "Librarian" accomplish?

It just tackles that Fleet Foxes mellow vibe very well, in a way that sounds legitimate and not gimmicky. I really don't get what's so special about the Fleet Foxes. They were #1 on so many year-end lists, it's mind bottling.
  • I find Fleet Foxes, especially the Sun Giant EP to be the best of 08'. I didn't like their sound at first, but just got into them over the last month. Myknonos, White Winter Hymnal, In the Hot Hot Rays, and Drops in the River are my favorites.

I think Librarian is the worst song on Evil Urges. "Interwebs," really? I think that album was a step back for MMJ, and all of the new slow songs are set killers in their live show. They still are my 3rd favorite band though.

Fleet Foxes is easily my favorite album of 2008 (along with Sun Giant EP). #2 would be MMJ Evil Urges. Both are just incredible albums!

That Evil Urges album is the most schizophrenic album of the year for me. I love it one day, hate it the next, ignore it for two weeks, come back and love it. It's crazy.
  • I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! I still, after 6 months of having the album, can't get enough of it!

Wow, I love MMJ, but "Librarian" is about the most gimmicky song of theirs I can think of, next to "Highly Suspicious". I suppose they both have a 70's vibe, but "Librarian" is more AM Gold; Fleet Foxes sound so much more organic. I can't find any fault with those four-part CSN&Y harmonies. Just gorgeous, and I don't think many other bands are doing that these days, certainly none as well as Fleet Foxes.

  • Fleet Foxes were on Radio 1 the other day. On a fleeting listen I thought Jo Whiley had finally got her dirty, stupid, horrid claws into MMJ and was unleashing them on the great British public to be honest... the song sounded to me, like it could have been from 'It Still Moves'... but a really bad song that was left in the archives never to be heard by human ears again...

    I don't think they're for me.

(for the record, I love MMJ ;) )
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Every song on Fleet Foxes is better than Librarian. I really like MMJ but I think Evil Urges is pretty terrible. You know you fucked up an album when the most interesting song features cookie monster on lead vocals.

I think Fleet Foxes are just a radio friendly, shit version of MMJ. They WISH they were good enough to write stuff like Librarian... let along anything off Z or It Still Moves.

    IMO ;)

I liked the Fleet Foxes album but prefer MMJ to be honest.

Album of the year for me was a toss up between Raconteurs and Nick Cave...

The Fleet Foxes record is good. Doesn't blow me away.

At the same time Evil Urges was teriible to me when i t came out. Now i'm in love with it.
Thank you too, Smokin from Shootin, Touch me 1-2, Title track, I'm Amazed are all incredible and fresh sounding for this band Imo. Top record of 08 for me.
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Definitely my favorite new band of 2008. Both records are gorgeous.

I do not see what Fleet Foxes have in common with My Morning Jacket aside from a slight vocal similarity. I'm a minor MMJ fan (hate the newest one but like a good portion of the previous albums), so I think I'm qualified to make the comparison.

And to say "Librarian" is better than or even comparable to anything on the Fleet Foxes records - come on! That song is one big, fat cliche and has nothing to do with the type of music that Fleet Foxes make. I already knew Jim James was a terrible lyricist with better musical/vocal skills, but that is one of the songs that put him over the edge as far as I'm concerned.

Nope, what I was saying is that the Fleet Foxes sound like a mash-up of the Shins and the Beach Boys. Not that the Shins sound like the Beach Boys.

Fleet Foxes are vastly over rated for something that Dr.Dog has been doing much better(in my opinon) for much longer.

The Foxes album is good...but it was no where near as good as everyone hyped it up to be, and it certainly is nowhere near as good as Dr.Dog's album "Fate"

    Best Releases 2008

    1) Dr.Dog "Fate"
    2) The Black Keys "Attack and Release"
    3) My Morning Jacket "Evil Urges"
    4) Black Angels "Directions to See A Ghost"
    5) Radio Moscow "Radio Moscow"
