Been looking to pick up one of these and I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions. I'm not looking to pay more than $150. I also don't know how good or bad these can be. Anything that makes a HDD "good" or "bad"? Or would pretty much any random HDD do?

I found this one at walmart.com, which seems to be pretty damn huge for the price, but that usually means it's shitty..

Any suggestions are welcome, thanks :D

im sure all hard drives are the same, made in china with the same bits inside. as you go up in price you probably just get more disc space, better looking cases, cooling features etc.

i went with this one over a year ago. i had never heard comstar and a google search at the time wasnt much help. it does get hot but its been running day and night for over a year with no problems yet. i would highly recommend it but im sure the one you are looking at is just as good.

  • If I were you, I'd go with a notebook external harddrive. I've had 3 externals before, 2 were normal ones with the power supply and stuff.. the power supply in both of them eventually gave out, causing me to lose everything. Right now Im using a notebook external, with no power supply, just a usb 2.0 cord and I haven't have ANY problems with it at all. It even keeps up with the other ones as far as speed goes :)

Dont know how big of a harddrive you need, but right now best buy has a nice 250 gig (the same exact one I have) for $130

    Hope this helps.
  • It's really hit or miss with hard drives. Some people have had the best luck with brands that I've had the worst luck with...so you never really know. But generally, I'd say look at Maxtor, SeaGate, and Western Digital. I'd also look on http://www.tigerdirect.com instead of walmart. I've been buying from them for years, and they have good prices and they don't typically sell anything that's cheaply constructed.

My best advice for buying any computer parts is http://www.newegg.com I have used them a lot and they always seem to have the best prices around, and you can read the reviews on all the products before you buy. I highly suggest you check them out!
Here's a link to their top selling external hdds.
