Anyone know where I can find a fairly cheap external hardrive for maybe around $50. 160 GB

Edit: other than on ebay, of course. I've already found a couple of decent ones on there that I'm watching, but I was hoping that maybe someone on here may have an extra that they are looking to get rid of- thanks again!

Got http://www.newegg.com. They have great deals on hard drives, and they are a reputable company. I have had a lot of dealings with them.

  • The external USB enclosure itself is going to be about $20 - 25. You can buy those separately and drop in any drive...super easy. To get a decent HD for $25 - 30...above the enclosure cost...I'm not so sure you're going to find much of anything even at refurbished prices.

  • That's crazy it must be a misprint.

Not sure I would trust my data to a $25-$30 hard drive....it's gotta be a refurb, or dropped box special.

I don't know how they can even manufacture and ship a hard drive at that price.

I wouldn't trust ANY single hard drive to anything I couldn't get back again.
As I tell everybody, If you have files that are important, always store them in AT LEAST 2 different places. I use an external WD 500gb as a backup only. All my Photos/Music/Video is on 2 different computers and an external HDD. I also burn them to disc once a year.

I believe the price....you can get 500gb hard drives for under 60 bucks nowadays. Not too many negative reviews on Cavalry drives either

If I had a dollar for every time I told someone always have a backup of a backup...

Must be all the terabyte drives coming into the market lately pushing down the price curve.

I'm waiting for the 16Gig memory sticks to get into the same situation.

Just a matter of time before any drive checks out no doubt.

    A Kingston for 30? whereabouts?

  • Flash drives are getting so cheap nowadays, the 16gb ones are still over 100, but go on sale for way cheap, but the 8gb ones (which used to be $100) are down to about 50 and then cheaper on sale. its crazy

my laptop has vista and I think because of that I don't have a whole lot memory - that's what I was told, and I'm not computer savvy at all so no idea if that's the reason.

I have a lot of music on here, and I'd like to move it because I now have trouble adding anything new or indeed running some exist applications, I've pretty much pared it down to what I really need to keep it functioning.

What is the difference between using a flash drive and an external hard drive? If the 16g flash drive can hold so much, why would I also consider getting an external hard drive? I've been advised to get both, I guess I just don't know which one I'd use for what really....help!!

An external hard drive is geared towards mass storage, but generally not portablility. You find sizes like 320gb, 500gb, 750gb, and even 1tb, when looking at external hard drives. They generally run off of a plug into the wall and a USB into the compter.

Flash drives are geared towards protability. They are small, generally 2" long, and come in smaller sizes (1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb, 16gb).

There is the case of course, of portable external hard drives. These are much smaller than external hard drives and dont need to be plugged into a wall, only into the computer.

It really comes down to what you intend to do, and how youd use it. At home, I have a 500gb external hard drive hooked up to my desktop, for backups so I dont lose my files. But I also have a few flashdrives, I use those for bringing files with me.

Yeah, the portable externals range from about 160gb-320gb. They are about the size of an iPod in physical dimensions.

I think that might be what I'm looking for then. what are good brands for that? I see some external hard drives on that buy.com site but not sure which fall into the portable category. I also need something very reasonably priced.

side question, if I have itunes on my desktop, what is the best way to use those files on my laptop?

I have a portable external drive for my laptop. It is Western Digital and you can recognise their portables as they are called passport (they are about the size of a passport and about 1cm thick).
