I'm trying to play a .wav file and am getting this message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
How can I get access??? Do I need to use another application???

Brave to try to gamble at times
No joy with winamp - but thanks anyway.
I've tried Quicktime - but that doesn't work either...
Um hi rabbit.
I did see this thread earlier, but I was loathe to post, coz I'm a technology moron.
However, I have had this problem that you speak of.
I gave up in the end and deleted, but I wonder if you have a conversion program? Like Cdex or Cool Edit or something similar.
They may be able to fix the problem.
Hope that makes some sense.
Cheers.

In your WMP options, under Tools, Options, click the File Types tab and make sure WAV is ticked.
Convert to wma files.
Thanks Redrock - Tried that, but can't convert as it's saying input file is copy protected
It's the Astoria show - it didn't finish downloading until Sunday morning (from Friday lunchtime!!!!) and now I can't play the damn thing!!
Thanks for your reply too Jeanie I think I'll end up deleting it - it's driving me bonkers!
Don't delete anything!
Burn the files to disk.. It should definitely burn the wav if not play them... then you will have the Astoria CDs to play on your hifi... THEN rip the files from the CD.. rip them in wma, then you have the files you can play on your pc... Whatever you do.. it is sacrilege to delete Astoria!!!! :D:D And if you're desperate, I can always try MSN sharing folders with you!!!
Ooh! Don't delete it!!! Do what redrock says!
Just take a deep, deep breath and remain calm.

Well, how about the obvious first. When you boot into Windows, do you hear the startup sound? Or any sounds for that matter that are related to the operation of Windows? Dings, beeps, etc.. there's lots of 'em.
If you do, something is screwy, since those sounds are just wav sounds.
If you're unsure, you can check it by clicking on Start, then click on Run. In the Run box type "mmsys.cpl", without the quotes. From there click on the Sounds tab, and highlight one and click the little play button. Hear anything? If so, it's an issue with WMP, or any other player you try that doesn't give you playback. Have you added a soundcard, or are you just using onboard audio? If you have added a card without disabling the onboard audio, you have to specify which device you want to use for playback and recording. That option can be set in the Sound control panel as well. You'll see those options on the Audio tab. These options can also be application controlled, meaning that WMP or Winamp, or any audio player software for that matter can make these selections as well.
Sorry if that's all a bit much, but aside from file corruption, which has been mentioned, there are a lot of other options that could be causing this problem. Oh, and one last thing. Be sure you're upto date on your windows patches. I'm sure there's always a few for Windows Media Player.
Good luck!
EDIT: I figure I should add this link if you'd like to test any .wav files for corruption. You can try this app here: http://railjonrogut.com/WAV%20Saver.htm
I haven't tried it myself, but it looks safe and legitimate. Let us know how you make out.
Whoa there fella!!!
In case you haven't figured, I'm pretty useless when it comes to this type of thing!
I'll try and check all of that out but I'm not using a soundcard and my speakers work fine on everything else so the corrupt file theory seems to be gaining momentum...
I'm sure I'll be back but in the meantime, big thanks
Thanks to Jeanie, Gue and Redrock too
Redrock - I suspect I'll be knocking on your door with my hotmail address pretty soon!
Hi, if you downloaded FLAC and decoded to wav maybe there was an error in the decoding.
You should try decoding a new wav, that might help.
If not get winamp and the flac plugin and see if the flac file plays all the way through.
If it stops at any point and you get an error window mentioning 'decoding' or 'processing' or something like that it means your flac file is faulty.
BUT if the flac is faulty you shouldn't be able to decode in the first place.
Thanks Bangers
As far as I know it downloaded as a wav file... I haven't converted it to anything as its 'copy protected'.
