random/stupid iTunes question

okay. got my girl the new iPod Nano 8GB. i figured if i just created a new playlist and put all the songs she wanted in there and plugged her iPod in i'd be good! no. i need some new version of iTunes.... so if i download this will it erase my iTunes library.. or do i have to download the new iTunes and transfer my entire library over????????????????????????????? this is stupid.
