Hey.
I've finally gotten around to ripping all my CD's to my computer so that I can now download all of them to my Ipod.
Problem is, everytime I plug it in to do so, it warns me that if I proceed, I will erase everything that's currently on there and replace it with my new selections.
There are a lot of songs on there that I don't have on my computer anymore so I really don't want to do that.
Is there a way I can add new songs to my old list instead of replacing it with a new one?
Thanks.

If you have your iPod set up to "sync" automatically then every time you plug in your pod it will erase whatever you have on it and replace it with whatever you have in your iTunes library. So basically if your iTunes library has 1 track in it.....then it will wipe your iPod contents and sync it to your iTunes library.....resulting in an iPod that has that 1 track on it
I manually manage my music......so I add whatever albums I want to put on my iPod to my iTunes library.....then manually drag and drop them onto my iPod.
If there is stuff that you dont have on your computer (so basically stuff you dont have in your iTunes library) this is the only way to go.
If you want to go through the hassle of adding EVERY track you want to keep on your iPod to your iTunes library then you need to find some of the software mentioned above to transfer songs from your iPod to your PC. Once your iTunes library has EVERYTHING in it that you want to keep on your iPod - then you can set it to "sync" automatically.....this way everytime you add a new song/album to your iTunes library it will automatically get added to your iPod when you connect your iPod to your PC. It will literally wipe ALL the songs off your iPod and re-add ALL the songs from the iTunes library EVERY time you connect to your computer.
Having your iPod set up to automatically sync is dangerous IMO......if you ever plug your iPod into someone elses computer it will empty your iPod contents and add the contents of the new computers iTunes library etc etc etc.
hope this make sense

When I go into options, I don't have a "manually manage..." option, but I do have one that says "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods." That would basically be the same thing, right?
when you connect you iPod to your computer and it comes up under devices in your iTunes.....if you click on your device (whatever you have named it).....it should go to a screen ("Summary") that gives the iPod info + Version + Options all on that first screen......one of the options should be "manually manage music and videos"
.....the 2nd tab (when looking in your "device") should be "Music" - at least it is for mine - and on that page make sure you toggle off the "Sync Music" option
I dont have the "Disable automatic syncing...." option toggled on in my iTunes preferences - so i'm not sure what it does
the "manually manage...." and "Sync Music" options are settings specific to your iPod - it will be saved on your iPod and will follow it wherever you take it
the "disable automatic syncing...." is only an iTunes preference for the iTunes program on your computer
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
Thanks so much for your help!
I was thinking about your situation last night and the only flaw I can see in my plan is that your iPod is going to want to sync as soon as you plug it in......so you wont be able to access the device options to disable the sync'ing
.....perhaps if you toggle on the iTunes preference for "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods.".....then plug your iPod in and go into the Device settings......then that will work for you
you could always try posting your questions at the iPod discussion board - they have helped me out of some sticky situations there before:

I thought the same thing the night I read your post (that if I plugged it in, I wouldn't have a chance to go to options, before it started syncing on me), so I didn't do it.
I did toggle the "disable syncing button" last night, but then realized I forgot my friggin' Ipod at work, so I'll have to try it tonight when I get home.
Thanks again so much for your help. I'll let you know how I make out!
