I've used eFax for a couple years and I love it. They do offer a basic service for free. With the free service the phone number may not be a local prefix for you and the faxes you receive can only be viewed with the eFax viewer. With my paid service, the faxes come to my emailbox as attached pdf files so I can easily retrieve and read them from any computer and forward them onto other people. Most of my clients are in a different state from me, so I choose a number that would be local for my clients.
There are actually many free fax services but they are limited and you'll be reading a lot of ads. Just Google "Free Fax".
