I just bought this router. its on its way. I'm not a gamer but I do alot of downloading and uploading of various music, dvds, etc. my current netgear goes out all the time. I am forced to use wireless in my office. hopefully this router will be good.

what does everyone else use? happy with it?

If you want good equipment, go for Linksys (daughtercompany of Cisco systems) ...

They offer great quality for a very nice price...

Of course, nothing beats a wired network eh :D
I stick to wires, but I'm considering a wireless gateway for easier laptop-access.
I'm gonna go for a real cisco or a linksys device.

 linksys?? there is no cisco equipment in linksys. cisco just bought them, not gave birth to them ;)

but I agree cisco wireless equipment is hands down the best. sadly a cisco wireless AP will go for no cheaper then $500 bucks

Although I don't have that model, I currently am using d-link products for for my routers, bridges etc. I also use Netgear. I haven't had any problems with either.

As for Linksys, well Jamal I'm glad you have had success with them. For whatever reason, I have never been able to make them work. :o

True, but although they did buy them, they are now running under the same principle and qualitatively superb production process (so I've been told).

Cisco wouldn't put their name on anything that sells crap, now would they?
However they have been known to experience slight firmware issues, but they regularly release updates :)

& @ cutback: what sort of trouble might you have had?
    *edit*
by the way, I don't own any linksys equipment myself, but I have some routers and switches (most of them cisco, some USR/3COM-switches and RAS)

well linksys has always been looked down upon in the ISP/networking world, at least in my experience. everyone had one because it was always the biggest display at best buy or where ever.

I hope what you have been told is right.

I reckon a teacher is quite trustworthy as a source (as they are also cisco certified)

But if I had the chance, I'd be basing my opinion on my very own experiences...

no doubt. I have my CCNA. I am a huge fan of cisco. but im also a business man. linksys was just a business decision to buy linksys. cisco has thrown zero money towards R&D at it. but, like you said, that is changing for sure. linksys is earning respect in the tech community. so anyway, GO LINKSYS!!

I tried Linksys when they where the first to come out with routers for "personal" use. After a lot of trial and error I was able to make it work. But it was never stable. So I tried one of Netgears first routers. It is still being used at my office to this day and that's probably 5-6 years of constant use. When by brother asked me to setup wireless at his house a couple years back we went shopping for a router but the only brand the store had was Linksys. Well Cisco had just bought them and I knew they were a solid company so I thought well they know better than I what makes good network equipment. Needless to say, I am at my bro's house right now and am getting excellent wireless speed and coverage using a Netgear router. :)

I have never had any issue with Linksys or D-Links.

We are pro Linksys here in my IT department. The interface is really user friendly and they have been nothing but work horses for our user's.

In relation to this, does any1 know a reasonable way to set up a telephone central (you know, for handling calls and inside lines)???
Eventually this would link up to an Voip gateway in some manner in the future

this I already know, but would it be best (when using voip) to connect the pbx behind the firewalls and first router or directly isnto the pstn...

Also, Cisco pbx modules seem to be available only with 1 interface of a phone...
can't find any info on how to connect a network of at least 15 phones. Can you switch this through a switch?

And I like my equipment to be rackmounted (neat and compact;)), so small standalone systems don't quite apply :(

As are we in my IT department. It's also what I have at home. The most I've ever had to do to troubleshoot it, and very rarely at that, is reset it.

    That's the one I'd recommend.

reset it???? thats the last thing I want to do. I have so many configurations in my router, I would be so pissed if I had to reset that damn thing. new router gets here today. im pumped

She just means power cycling it. It doesn't loose any configuration. All hubs and routers need to be power cycled periodically.

Not when it comes to routers. As far as I'm aware. I haven't had to "reset" it under your definition since I got it.

    Thank you Animal.

I must be the black cloud of death when it comes to Linksys then.:( ;)

And jlew, if you haven't, you should back up your router settings in case a malfunction forces you to do a reset.

hmmmmmm well there is a reset button on all routers. when that button is pushed, the router will default back to its factory defaults.

    I second that...
It's also nice to have the configs for when you need to switch between network settings etc.

I'm not sure how you do it on a consumer-level router/gateway/switch
Is it the same as in the command line for Cosco & Juniper etc?

its not command line. but its very simple point and click from the web interface.. I do it all time. but now I am changing manufacturers so I will need to re-enter in all my configs manually

I don't have that one, but I have another D-Link and it works great.

yea I specifically need one that can handle high traffic without having to go to a cisco AP. hopefully this does the trick

    Ha. Indeed. ;)

As far as the reset, from now on in this forum I'll always say "power cycle" so I'm not misunderstood.
